The Calgary Stampede got off to a grim start on Friday when a horse had to be euthanized after breaking its leg during the festival's first night of chuckwagon racing.

The horse's death comes in the wake of a substantial overhaul to animal care standards at the Calgary Stampede, leaving officials to answer some pointed questions on rodeo safety.

"The leg injury was considered a catastrophic injury, so our veterinarian made the decision to euthanize the horse immediately," Stampede spokesman Doug Fraser said in a statement released after the horse was put down.

"Honestly, we're greatly saddened by what happened today. We take the care of our animals very seriously."

During a chuckwagon race, a driver -- in this case, Cliff Cunningham -- leads a team of thoroughbred horses around a circuit.

Fraser said the injury wasn't the result of a crash and happened between turns on the race course.

No riders or other animals were hurt during the race.

In the wake of Friday's chuckwagon incident, the Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) has called upon the Calgary Stampede to suspend the races.

"The Stampede's claims to have made the race safer have been proven false," VHS spokesperson Peter Fricker said in a statement issued on Saturday.

"It is totally unacceptable to continue this event when horse after horse is dying just to entertain a crowd."

In an attempt to fend off criticism after six horses died at the Stampede in 2010, the annual event's chuckwagon racing protocol has undergone significant changes including the implantation of a microchip in every horse scheduled to compete in the competition.

The chip tracks the horses during races and while they're at rest, allowing officials to monitor whether the animals' owners are complying with mandatory rest day rules.

Owners must also submit a list of horses competing daily by 4 p.m. The animals are then given a pre-race inspection, and if it is found not fit to compete, it is supposed to be pulled from the event.

Also, unlike years past when up to four outriders on horseback have accompanied each wagon as it thunders around the dirt track, the number has now been reduced to two.

On his blog, chief Stampede veterinarian Greg Evans said officials want to be careful not to race horses to the point of fatigue.

"Chuckwagon racing is such a unique sport, such a specialized sport, that there isn't a lot of scientific data available about what appropriate racing schedules are," he wrote.

"We feel like we are in a unique position, being the largest event and the longest event, to track some of that and generate our own data."

Evans said he hopes that new microchips and a strict schedule will help officials make educated decisions on when racehorses should rest.

But despite changes to animal care standards, several animal welfare groups remain ardently opposed to the annual rodeo, which many see as inherently cruel.

Last year, the protest spread to Britain. A group called League Against Cruel Sports called on Ottawa to end "the immense cruelty" in rodeos and suggested to British travel agencies that they refuse to offer vacation packages to the Stampede.

More than 50 MPs signed a motion in the British House of Commons that asked the Canadian government to improve how animals were treated at the rodeo.

Of the six horses that died at last year's Calgary Stampede, two suffered fatal heart attacks, two were destroyed after suffering injuries and another broke its back from bucking too hard.

The sixth died after experiencing health difficulties 40 minutes after a chuckwagon race.

To all of you who think it is "ok" just because it is a sport and that it is ok to put an animal in any danger-(that does not have the choice) I think you need to reexamine your comment. As for hockey and all those other sports, where people who can make their own choices and hence choose to participate in- if they are wanting to take the risk - That is their choice. The key is they make the choice!!!! Do you get it???? These poor animals do not have a choice!!!!! Is it clear to you yet??? Again- They did not make the decision-ptheir owner did!!!

Brett said "Anyone who has said anything against the stampede had better never buy meat, eggs, or milk at the store! If you do, you're no better than anyone in the stampede...." -- You might want to look into your statement. Huge steps have been made over the years in the humane treatment of livestock. These humanely treated animals are they used for food - not simply entertainment for people in cowboy hats.

Pain and suffering and death imposed upon an unchoosing creature by humans -- this is the crux of the problem, right? Then why do people support abortion? It's inhumane to do this to animals, but not to our own flesh and blood? We must remove the plank from our own eye before trying to get the dust out of others' eyes.

Oh, and can we all, pro or anti, have a COMPLETE ban on that awful word "euthanized". It's a horrible, cowardly way of avoiding the actual fact of what has happened. It's a euphemism for the term "put down" which is itself a euphemism for "killed", though I'm prepared to accept that one more than "euthanized" since "killed" carries more violent implications than the humane killer or injection used in those circumstances. While we're on the subject, "passed over", "away" or "on" can go as well... It's my view that these prissy ways of avoiding the icky-poo subject of death are partly to blame for some of the misguided attitudes of animal rightists.

To Brandy, yes I do care more about animals than people, Animals cant say when they hurt and they do not choose to do these stupid sports. If this horse was old it should have been left to live its life out in a pasture where its life could end peacefully, instead it was put through this rigorous sport for human entertainment. That is very sad. If your child doesnt want to do a specific sport do you force him out there and drive him till he drops dead, of course not. STOP the insanity, and I fully support PETA

If this was a freak accident, it would be easier to swallow. But this was no freak accident. Animal injuries and deaths are an integral part of chuckwagon racing. Every single year there are incidents like this at the Calgary Stampede. Given this clear track record, continuing this event constitutes deliberate cruelty and endangerment of animals. Chuckwagon racing should be banned for the same reason dog fighting is banned: It hurts and kills animals.

JD Ottawa, but its ok to beat kids and people and get away with it. Do really think that the Stampede enjoys putting down their stock. I am just saying people seem to get more vocal about a horse being put down, but we don't here an out cry like this when it comes to a person being abused or killed. Our judicial system doesn't seem to care. Farm and ranch stock die everyweek from stepping in gopher holes or badger holes just like people die in road crashes everyday. Stopping the chucks isn't going to make a difference alot of these horses would end up being put down. It's sad to see any stock put down. There more wild animals being killed in our Nationa Parks every week than stock at the Stampede and I don't see any of these people making these comments saying anything about them, the same people complaing are probably the ones speeding thru our National Parks.

@Brett: There is a huge difference between killing an animal quickly for the purpose of eating it and breaking an animal's legs through recklessness for no other reason than entertainment and letting it writhe and suffer until someone can kill it. Year after year horses are maimed during the chuckwagon races and have to be put down on the track. It's pointless and inhumane.

I am a little ambivalent on this issue. The chuckwagons celebrate the traditions of the forefathers who settled the west. I think if you take away the commercial aspects, that is what the stampede is really about. Putting a spotlight on cowboys who are another symbol of western spirit. Chuckwagon racing is a fast and rough sport, no doubt that. In any sport of that kind there are accidents that are bound to happen no matter what precautions are taken. I am not so sure that it is cruelty to animals insomuch as the horses probably do enjoy the competitive and racing aspect of it. After all they are work horses and that is what they enjoy doing. So I think that PETA are marching to the wrong drum on this one.

If you don’t like boxing then don’t step into the ring! If you don’t like guns, don’t own one! If you don’t like hunting or fishing, don’t do it!!! if you don’t like the Calgary Stampede, then don’t go!!! It’s that simple. But you people do NOT have the right to tell others what they can or cant do.I bet that 99% of these bleeding heart people who want things banned have never participated in the sport! So there for they have no idea what they are talking about.

Two things that everyone should keep in mind. First, if it wasn't for rodeo and specifically chuck wagon racing, this horse would never have existed in the first place. Second, in the wild, odds are this horse would have had a significantly harder life and suffered a far more painful and grizzly death.

Now a Human hurts an Horse for the purpose of tradition and entertainment and it has to be put down. Something does not sound right here. There's a flood or a wildfire, it's climate change and we should all stop driving/using oil. There's a tragic accident at a sporting event and an animal had to be put down, it's animal abuse and we should stop all related events immediately...

What kind of world do they actually WANT, I wonder...good grief, accidents happen. Get over yourselves

Alot of people are highlighting the fact that perfectly good horses are being "murdered" or "killed" in this sport. Being someone whose family has been chuckwagon racing for over 30 years, i can tell you that ultimately, we are saving this horses and prolonging their lives. We take these horses at the end of their career and put them on a chuckwagon. Other wise, they would be put down after their prime (6-10 years). We have a number of retired horses well in their 20s now

Exact same place the rodeo horses would be if they were used for that purpose. Which would you prefer? People talk about saving thier lives, well, they wouldn't have a long life if they weren't serving a purpose. I don't see anyone petitioning France not to eat horse meat...You don't buy hay to feed horses because they are so cute. Wake up.

Troy: I grew up on a ranch & I agree that most ranchers value & treat their livestock humanely, and with great care. But your argument doesn't hold up as it applies to rodeo. No sane person would run/work his child to death, just as no sane rancher would purposely torment his animals, especially to the point of injury or death. This cruel spectacle goes far beyond the bounds of animal husbandry.

Just wondering -- Why are they using "race horses" instead of the "farm horses" they would normally use on a ranch? Quarter horses are more suitably built for this type of activity and thoroughbreds are not meant to pull anything! If this is a "true" Stampede event, shouldn't they only be using the more durable quarter horses at the Stampede just like they do on a ranch? They wouldn't have as many broken legs and fewer horses being euthanized!

A friend of mine breeds Arabian horses and he said he loses a horse every once in a while to a broken leg because horses like to (here it comes again for those who are against the Stampede) run. That's right, horses love to run which is why you see horses at the chuckwagon races with their ears straight up just before the race starts. They are excited and want to run. Horses are only good for entertainment such as riding and racing. Otherwise they will either end up as glue or on European dinner plates. When I see the hateful comments towards animals it makes me ashamed to be part of the human species. I still care about most people, and I care about animals. But I don't care about the ignorant who think animal life has no value. Animals have as much right to live and be protected from abuse as any of you do.

As one person mentioned we care more about our pets, then human suffering. Also, if you protesters get your way in everything, we will not be allowed to go fishing. How would you like to be dragged around by your mouth?

I guess from all the comments here, the thing that supporters seem to miss, is that the horses have not been given the choice to participate or not.Comparing this event's risks to horses to other events that involve harm to humans is not quite right. The human has the option to not participate.

And once again, the typical "ban the Stampede because I don't like it" crowd comes out, right on cue. Here's a bit of information for all you folks: the Stampede is closely watched and monitored by a variety of government agencies and humane societies, like the Alberta SPCA and the Calgary Humane Society. Guess what, folks? Not once have they ever charged the Calgary Stampede with any kind of cruelty charge.

Now a horse on a bobsled I'd pay to see! "What about the people that might get hurt?" Their choice to engage in the activity, no sympathy here for them, unlike for the horses, which aren't lined up around the block to sign up for the stampede....and if they are, I'd pay to see THAT also!

It's sad how many people still think of animals as inanimate objects they can use and abuse instead of the living, breathing, thinking creatures they actually are. Why must these kind of humans be so arrogant and disrespectful to other creatures that share our planet?

I can't help but wonder why animals are still being treated so badly in this day and age. You would think people would be more evolved by now and know how to respect other living beings.

I hate how whenever this thing happens people who have NEVER owned a horse worked with a horse or EVER had anything to do with them instantly cry things like animal cruelty, murder, this is wrong. These things happen people yes it is unfortunate and sad but it does happen! and the other people are right these animals do get first class care compared to if they where just out on a farm or at a lower profile rodeo event. Get over yourselves

It's obvious the changes in chuck wagon racing has failed and the event needs to be stopped now before more horses are put down. Somebody at the helm of the Calgary Stampede needs to step in now and show leadership and the compassion they claim they give their animals.

Some of you are missing the point that horses don't die from competing in this "sport" uncommonly or on rare occasion; rather, they end up dead regularly. (Six died last year.) Having said this, such horses are domesticated animals chiefly bred for human leisure and sporting entertainment. It's not as though these particular horses would be galloping wild out in some field, laughing it up, otherwise. Their "utility" is terminal. It seems quite evident that the Calgary Stampede is now making all reasonable efforts to address the issue, and evolve its policies and procedures accordingly. Chuckwagon races are a traditional event of "sport," not a veterinary science activity.

And to think so many people gave me the thumbs down for pointing out the fact that Prince William and Kate were made to attend such a controversial event. Thankfully they weren't there when it happened. Maybe the people in Calgary should trade in those white cowboy hats for black ones.

...and so it begins for yet another year. More blood in Calgary. If the cruel and uncaring comments from people here who support these events are any indication, it's easy to see why these beautiful animals die every year. There is no point in expecting them to care or do anything to stop it - so the law must!

This is just mean! If you care so much about your animals you think after the 2nd or 3rd horse died youd try to change and save the rest! I understand the event is fun but when the fun is at the exspence of an animal its not worth it! There is other ways and other events!

@ Terri C from Markham, you make me sick. Animals shouldn't have to be tortured and punished just because they were not born human. It's because of attitudes like yours that make humans look like the most barbaric and evil species on this planet.

Knowing the risks, people choose to drive cars, enter sports like boxing....and golf. These horses don't have that choice. We force them into events that are inherently risky and deflect accountability when accident or death occurs.

the favourite horses of the chucks are thoroughbreds that are no longer able to win races. they are hot-blooded animals that do not belong pulling wagons. they have very fragile legs that break easily. it's heartbreaking to watch a horse you looked after being treated like a coldblood by a bunch of cowboys.

most of these horses would be dead anyway, these guys buy them from the race tracks after they are finished as racers. So if they did not buy them, they would be put down. The ones that think this is so cruel, maybe you should be going and buying them, keep them as pets, put your money where your mouth is if this is wrong.

A few days ago I wrote on facebook's 'Calgary Stampede Rodeo Protest page' that at the beginning of every Stampede I wonder how many horses will die in the chucks THIS year and yesterday was the first day of the Stampede and already one horse dead. When is this going to stop? Enough is enough. Who really needs to see this kind of cruelty? The horse had NO choice. It will stop when the majority of people see how ridiculous this kind of so called entertainment is. All because a bunch of people playing dressup cowboy want to make a bunch of cash. They say that the owners take good care of their animals...yes for sure because they have a big investment in them. The same way a race car driver has for his car. But these aren't cars. They are living beings. Remember it's the 'Richest Rodeo' in the world! That is how they advertise it. Very sad start to the Stampede.

It is sad the horse had to be put down. I do enjoy horse back riding from time to time. Maybe they should consider racing only straight courses for their chuck wagon races, as maybe that would put less stress on the animals when they are pulling a wagon behind them. I don't know much about the racing or whether it is brutal for the animals or not but I have noticed most of the injuries or accidents seem to happen when they are making turns. I also do not agree with putting something uncomfortable on an animal to make it buck (if that is what they do) for the bronco shows.

Dave, I'm so sick of people like you who just assume that those who show compassion towards animals automatically don't care about human life. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having respect for the lives of non-humans as well as humans. There is absolutely nothing wrong with caring about the abuse of innocent creatures who cannot speak for themselves. We can judge the moral progress of a nation by the way it treats animals, and this can also apply to individuals as well.

Keep the Chuck wagon races. People who do not know animals, deeply just do not understand what equestrian sport is all about. All real competitive sport carries risks of injury to humans and in this situation to their partners. The racing horses are from the track, they are breed to run and they love it. They want to run, it is in their blood. So for all you folks who have no idea, have never owned horses or competed with horses.. just be quiet. Ignorance is the issue here...these horses are better treated than the average horse. How about the deaths in the wild, cruel deaths due to injury and disease... In Calgary if an issue occurs the horses are guaranteed first class Vet. care.... Never stop Calgary!!!.. keep running forever, afterall the horses run crazy in the wild... just ignore the ignorant.!!! A real horsewoman...!!

I was there last night, at the Chuck's. It was a fun-filled action packed event. I am not Albertan and have owned and loved many animals in my lifetime. We breed animals for domestic purposes. We breed animals to eat. We breed animals to do work. We breed animals to compete: And in all those cases animals die unfortunate deaths arguably because of the interference of man. A fact of life that no crusading activist will ever change. Honestly folks, get off the backs of those millions who flock to Calgary to enjoy the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. The animals are cared for very well, but accidents will happen. Surely there must be a more worthy cause to invest your time.

A horse in the field can break its leg tripping in a gopher hole. Yes, any type of racing increases the risk, but should that mean eliminating racing altogether? (Interesting that PETA and other protest groups don't seem to express any care for the riders!)

Waaahhhh.... cry me a river. Horses exist for the pleasure of humans. But these left-wing PETA animal-rights EXTREMISTS are trying to equate the life of animals to humans. Collateral damage. MAINSTREAM Canadians support the Calgary Stampede - an important part of our Canadian culture, tradition, and heritage.

horses born and bred to race love it. This just happens sometimes. boxers die in boxing should we ban it? bobsled and lugers die should we ban it? All sports have a death at some time. Golf has more deaths than you can imagine because of heart attacks. The calgary zoo has had its share of deaths, should we close it? These horses are cared for and have a great life, these people love the animals they train and race. death happens to all liviing things at some time.

people die every day from car accidents yet no one stands up and says we should stop using cars ! accidents happen people have heart attacks and break legs and shatter bones in other sporting events! it's the risk of competition theses horses are competitors ! anyone who knows horses knows you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink the water. well you can take a horse to the race track but you can't make it race its heart out like theses horses do ! let the horses race at the rodeo like you let the sprinters sprint at the Olympics

I own several horses. They are a domesticated animal bred to either run or work as a draft animal. The chuckwagon race is exciting to watch......the first couple of times, then it becomes sort of boring for me. It is just a repetition after repetition.......I change the channel. This is the western heritage. It is a celebration of their culture. It is not confined to Calgary, these competitors have competed at numerous rodeos to get to the big show in Calgary, where the prize money is the biggest. Do like watching the other rodeo events, where there is more of a display of skill, and every one has a slightly different outcome..... that's exciting !!!

Fraser said the horse didn't die due to a crash but died on a turn, no matter how, the horse died a needless death due to this race. Fraser must have rocks for brains, he has no sympathy for the animals, He also said that they have the best safety program in the world, well 1 horse to die is one too many. Keep up the presuure V,H.S. this is animal torture.

This race needs to stop now. I have owned horses in my life, and their safety should always come first, not monetary gain just for show. This is sickening, I wish someone could stop this ridiculous race. Rodeo's themselves are not exactly the most humane event (cinch belts to make animals buck with a rider on, for example), but this particular race has gone from occasional calamity to seemingly an every year calamity. I cry whenever I hear of their deaths, their lives given in the so-called fun and good times of a Rodeo event. It's no better than the old Roman Colesseum events, a bloodletting with no boundaries. Why would I want my children to see this kind of thing?

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
