Police in Niagara Falls, Ont. say they have recovered the body of a woman who went over the falls on Tuesday just before 5 p.m.

Few details have been released about what took place, but The Associated Press cited reports that the woman appeared to be swimming in the Niagara River above Horseshoe Falls, just before being swept over.

Members of the Niagara Parks Police, Niagara Regional Police Casino Unit, Niagara Falls Fire and EMS units attended the shoreline below Horseshoe Falls after receiving the report.

With the help of employees from the Maid of the Mist -- a boat that brings tourists close to the powerful falls -- officers managed to recover the woman's body at around 4:30 p.m., stated a release from Niagara Regional Police Services.

A Buffalo TV news outlet reported that passengers on the Maid of the Mist saw the woman go over the 53-metre high falls.

Members of the Casino Patrol Unit Detective Office are continuing the investigation.

The victim's name, age and cause of death have not been released.
