SIDNEY, B.C. — It was a Hollywood ending for a bald eagle reality star whose imprisonment in a tangle of fishing line inside its nest meant sure death without a daring rescue.

Biologist David Hancock, who installed the wildlife cam that streams the nest live on the Internet, was hoisted to the nest this afternoon by a crane stabilized on the wet ground by huge mats.

Hancock raised the alarm about the eaglet's plight after watching via webcam as the bird struggled against the fishing line.

The nest is in a tree in a grassy meadow near Sidney, B.C., but the tree is half dead, ruling out a rescue effort by someone climbing it.

Plans for a rescue with a helicopter fell through on Wednesday.

But on Thursday, Hancock and his team were able to reach the nest with the crane under the watchful eye of the eaglet's parents.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
