Montreal police have found the body of a young girl who went missing 12 years ago, which has prompted an investigation into her apparent murder.

Jolene Riendeau was last seen alive on April 12, 1999, when she was playing near her house in a southwest Montreal neighbourhood.

Despite about 1,500 tips in the years that followed, she was never seen alive again.

Riendeau was just 10 years old when she disappeared.

On Wednesday, police announced that Riendeau's remains had been located and that her death was being investigated as a homicide.

While police won't say how they came to locate the missing girl's body, Sgt. Ian Lafreniere said investigators are pursuing a lead that could help them break the case.

"We do have a very serious lead about a possible suspect," Lafreniere told CTV News Wednesday.

"Knowing where we found the body, how it happened, when we discovered the body; that is the kind of detail we keep for ourselves."

Lafreniere said police are keeping the details of the case under wraps for now.

He said that investigators told the Riendeau family about their tragic finding on Wednesday morning.

"For them it was a shock," said Lafreniere.

The family gathered together on Wednesday, but made no immediate statements to the press.

Riendeau's mother, Dolores Soucy, posted on Facebook Wednesday, saying her daughter will rest in peace.

The Riendeau case remained a high-profile one in Montreal for many years and police twice dredged the Lachine Canal to search for her body.

Steve Roberts, a retired Montreal police homicide detective, said Riendeau's disappearance kept investigators busy for years, but they were never able to close the case.

"It was an up and down investigation," Roberts told CTV News on Wednesday.

"Every time you thought you had a good lead, you were at the top of the mountain. It didn't pan out, you were at the bottom.

"There is nothing worse for an investigator than an open case, because you are working for the family."

Riendeau's face is believed to have appeared on about a million missing children's posters after she disappeared.

At least now the family knows what to their loved one and can lay her to rest with some level of closure for them. May they find peace in knowing she is with God. Hopefully, they can have reassurance when the perpetrator(s) is caught and dealt with severly.

This has to be a tough day for this family. Not ever knowing would be a terrible thing to deal with for the rest of their lives. In spite of the long odds,I suspect most family members would cling to a slim hope.As terrible as this news is for them, now they know.My sincere condolances to them all I disagree with you "Anne".This has everything to do with politics and the justice system. This young girl deserves justice.Shuffling is off to the back page will just mean she never gets it.It's only the names and faces of innocent people who have been made vicitms that motivate any one to do anything about this pathetic system of injustice in Canada. Rest in Peace sweetie. You won't be forgotten in this household. We will continue to fight for justice for you.Laura Zendry, the Schoenborne children,Kimberly Proctor, and a list of other children that is far to long to be tolerated in any kind of a "just society".

My heart aches for this family. I am so sorry for your loss, words could never express it adequately. I had a friend murdered 20 years ago, and though the pain of her loss has slightened, it will never be completely diminished.
Take joy in the fact that she is, and has been, resting in the arms of Jesus all these years ... healthy and happy.
God be with you all, you're in my prayers.

I am truly sorry for the family.
I lost my brother years ago and he was never found, his was a boating accident though.
They will probably never see justice as, if they catch the person responsible, that person will probably get a couple years and out in half.
They have been robbed of the joy of watching her grow up and seeing her come down the aisle as she is married, then of couse the greatest joy is spoiling your grandchildren, then sending them home.

This has nothing to do with politics or the justice system. Until the person responsible is caught, justice has no role to play.My thoughts and prayers are with her family. Today, when my kids get home, there will be extra hugs.Be grateful for everyone in your life, everyday.

Rest in Peace! May the horrible cowardliness and evil of murderers and pedophiles finally influence judges in this country to stop slapping them on the wrist. Police work their "hearts" off having to look at all the evidence and present it to some "judges" who refuse to view it in its entirety; thus these lowlife get off with next to nothing. I will pray for peace in the hearts of her family!!

I feel for the family, but I will never know the anguish and pain they felt when she dissapeared; and all these years wondering where your little girl is. Now an end like this. I don't know how you go on, but I wish you strength and courage to continue on this journey. She is in a better place, now hopefully watching over and seeing to it that justice will be served to those responsible of stealing a young, beautiful soul.Rest in peace now.........

My deepest sympathy with her parents; what a terrible tragedy. Respect for life must be restored somehow.

I know commenter meant no harm, but i don't think there is ever closure. I think they at least know now. But this is a horrible end. I'm glad they found her so she can rest in peace and catch the you-know-what who did this to her and her family. My deepest deepest condolences. I remember seeing her poster everywhere, just wish it didn't have to be this way :(

One more victim because of Canada's wimpy justice system. Let's hope the Conservatives toughen things up. I'm sick of our children being victimized.

So sorry for Jolene's death and her parents' lost and suffering. If Jolene was victimized, I hope whoever caused her death can be brought to justice. We desperately need tougher laws for violent crimes and comprehensive public education about the modus operandi and profiling of predators in our society especially in child predation.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
