While NDP Leader Jack Layton fought his way to historic highs in the 2011 campaign, the real work is only beginning for the political veteran, analysts say.

With dozens of new MPs and the increased responsibility of holding a veteran group of Conservatives to account, the NDP leader will certainly have his work cut out for him.

A few weeks ago, the NDP were fourth nationally, with only 37 seats in Parliament. Today, they are the Official Opposition with 102 seats.

Many candidates who were elected in Quebec likely believed they didn't even have a shot at winning, since some "didn't have campaign offices or signs," said McGill University political expert Antonia Maioni.

Take Pierre-Luc Dusseault, a 19-year-old student of applied politics at the Universite de Sherbrooke, who becomes the youngest ever MP to sit in Parliament.

Then there is the now-infamous example of Ruth Ellen Brosseau, who was elected in central Quebec, despite the fact that she spent a week in Las Vegas during the campaign. The NDP has also admitted that Brosseau doesn't speak French fluently and has never done a media interview. She also wasn't in her riding when she was declared the winner.

Her father says he's as surprised as anyone else by her win.

"This is maybe a whole new stage of life that is going to put her in a different sphere," Marc Brosseau said.

Maioni said that a total of four students were elected Monday night, including two who have sat in her class at McGill.

"I think it speaks to the freshness and the new winds that are blowing from Quebec for the NDP," she told Power Play.

Maioni said the real issue for the Layton and his party is a lack of connection to the community in many ridings and a paltry political organization on the ground for many MPs across Quebec.

"Some of them have very little connection to the communities where they were elected," Maioni said.

To ensure the NDP don't become a "one-election wonder," the new batch of MPs and their staff will have to work hard to catch up with voters and create networks that can deliver successive victories, Maioni noted.

Meanwhile, Layton -- the heart and soul of his party -- is going to have to balance his new role as opposition chief with his new role as Quebec's representative in Ottawa.

Complicating matters is that Layton's key lieutenant in Quebec is MP Thomas Mulcair, who was nearly run out of Quebec City as an MNA in the provincial government, said Globe and Mail reporter Rheal Seguin.

Mulcair and Quebec Premier Jean Charest have a complicated relationship, but the two will have to work together.

"Now this is really a very interesting twist of affairs," Seguin said.

Still, the NDP appear to be relishing their newfound status as political heavyweights after decades of being the little guy.

For veteran NDP MP Libby Davies, the new faces in Parliament represent the diversity of Canada: students, young people and others included.

Plus, Davies said that NDP MPs are often the busiest in Ottawa, sitting on many different committees, coming up with fresh ideas and working on private member's bills.

"I think we already have a reputation as the most hard working MPs," Davies said, adding that the main goal is to hold the Conservatives accountable.

"We will have a very tough job, but I think we'll be a very tough opposition."

@CarlSorry Carl, but that's how democracy works. Has it not occurred to you that there was such a resentment at both the Liberals AND Conservatives that many voted for NDP as a protest at the status quo. Whether you like it or not, those who voted for the NDP in Quebec thought it important enough to get out and make a statement. It is notable that Quebecers voted for a federal party, that in itself is an encouraging sign as perhaps it means that Quebecers have decided to get more involved in national politics.

"How will Layton's new MPs take to Ottawa?" By public transit, bicycle, hitchhiking, and/or Prius hybrid. Jack Layton and his wife, Olivia Chow, on the other hand, will likely travel "expense-paid" VIP first-class commercial aircraft, chartered executive jet, or chauffeured stretch limousine from Toronto. After all, they represent, and can exclusively relate to, the "regular Joes" in Canada.

Well you're ALL entitled to YOUR opinions good bad or indifferent about the NDP. When a party like the NDP has been at the back of the horse race all these years, it is naturally obvious the RIGHT WINGED naysayers never thought they would be Her Majesty's Official Loyal Opposition! When we have only 61% voting in the country, the young people of Canada WILL now have a voice on their behalf via the NDP!At least the NDP has provided a great opportunity for these elected "young university students" to learn and express the many issues confronting the younger generation in Parliament. l'm positive that the majority Cons WILL be showing these young honorable NDP MP's the respect and courtesy during many many upcoming spirited debates from these young and bright people. So say all the negative comments you like about them. 8-)

Funny Jack!! You have been saying us you are going to change Ottawa. But, how Jack tells us? How are you going to change Ottawa with Conservative majority? You want to change ottawa with bagage of boggy men and women. How bar tender of our university pub will change Ottawa? How students and activist will change Ottawa who know nothing about our parliamentary systems? Your candidates even did not show up in their riding. They spent working in Lag Vegas, vacating with their families, writing exams in school, and so on. Jack !!! It’s sad day for our democracy. Look at your face before you complain others!!!!

I can't believe all the NDP bashing going on here, you Con's still have your majority, don't you? Or are you afraid you will be shown up as the same tired Reformers that most of your members are? Didn't Reform make a TON of mistakes when they came in? I, as a 50 something, am PROUD that so many young adults decided to run and many were elected. People bemoan the inactivity of the young and now they cry because they did something - can't have it both ways! So much for working together - you can't stand it that someone else might have a good idea!

Jack Layton will serve as comedy.Harper doesn't have to answer to anyone any longer so his agenda will be undertaken as he sees fit. Whether this turns out to be the worst thing for Canada depends on who you talk to. Those who voted for him felt it was ok to stack a bunch of scandals, have dishonest ministers and man the most controlling PMO in history. Given that, those who voted for him would be happy with pretty much anything.

So after spinning the Wheel Of Voter Truculence and ending up on Parliament Hill, Pierre-Luc Dusseault and Ruth Ellen Brosseau will be able to retire with $140,000.00/year pension all by the ripe old age of 25. This is what Jack Layton and his NDP hoard is all about. Jack & Olivia have made millions sponging off tax payers while managing to convince gullible voters they're in it for them. Wake up people! We now have over 100 NDP mouths to feeed with lifetime pensions for doing little more than filling in a contest form and heading for Vegas. That is the true nature of the NDP...they're in it for the pension, not for the country. Time to grow up and let the REAL MP's, the Conservative's, run the country. I'm running for the NDP in the next election, along with a million others.

He appealed to the Quebecers so will see how long it takes before they are disillusioned. Now he and his wife can move into subsidised housing again like they did when Toronto councillors of course that was illegal until they were caught. Olivia Chow couldnt wait until she was either in 24 Sussex or Stornoway she has such grandiose ideas.

One thing the new crop of NDP hill squatters will bring are headlines. And lots of them. Their lives are about to go under the microscope. And now that the election is over, the fangs will come back out on the hill - the Liberals and Block trying to get back into the game and the Conservatives trying to keep the NDP at bay. If nothing else, they will bring a new wave of entertainment to us, the paying public and will keep reporters and bloggers working overtime.

LP, give your head a shake. I'd say Alberta is doing just find in repaying the rest of Canada, both in the fact it sends far more money to Ottawa than it receives (not the case for all provinces) and in the number of people who've migrated there for its jobs. Without Alberta our unemployment rate would be crippling.

Jack..Wake up!!! Harper got a "Clear Majority" and is now the Prime Minister of Canada still and I repeat..Conservatives have a "Clear Majority"!! You should remeber that and will very soon find that out when the budget is passed, the long gun registry is abolished, when the crime bills are presented and passed, when the new prison or prisons are funded as planned and anything else the Conservatives can do as they wish...and yes, I believe Harper will include your good ideas if you or your newly elected young pups have any that won't bankrupt the country...so far I have seen few ideas your NDP had that can do that part!

The new crop of NDP MPs makes a mockery of our democracy. In many cases they did not even campaign for the job. This farce shows why PM Harper must abolish the per-vote subsidy to political parties ASAP. The NDP puts token candidates on the ballot in every riding just to increase the NDP's annual subsidy - and some of these token candidates accidentally got elected. The official opposition is going to be a total gong show.

Now they get $157,000/year plus tons of other money for "expenses...like maybe sneaking off to Vegas"...lol. OH Canada..what have you done? The young pups are in...the separatists are out...Wow!!!

I have a lot of mixed feelings about how this worked out in Quebec. On one hand,I am thrilled to see the voters in Quebec voting for a federalist party.A strong Canada needs Quebec. My fear is that they have been lied to by Jack Layton, and when they find out he cannot deliver on his promises,I fear many people in Quebec will once again turn to the sovereigntist option It will be hilarious watching the NDP in BC try to square these circles. The west is entitled to more seats in Parliament under the "rep by pop" principle. But Jack has promised those seats to Quebec. He's also been promising Quebec that all future SCOC judges must be fully functional in both official languages, and that all federal government employees in Quebec must function in French only,as per Bill 101. BC Premier Christy Clark said it best. The NDP is now a Quebec based party. There's nothing wrong with that,UNTIL you sell out the west to save your butt in Quebec. To succeed in uniting Canada,we will have to find a way for Quebec to live and enjoy it's more socialist tendency, and at the same time, allow other provinces to maintain the values that they hold dear.As a British Columbian,I have no interst in forcing Quebec to adapt to the values we have here. But I will also resist any attempt by Quebec,or any federal government,to make this province a more socialist province. So,let's find a way we can all get along, enjoy what we have in common, and respect our differences.

That we did not accept at all when we don't have enough money for our schools, hospital etc... Canada started in Quebec, and we remember that well, sovernty is not possible and we are not intersted in that. Next Qc provincial election, Marois is out, Charest out for good. The NDP will get wiped out of the opposition next time just like the Action Democratique in Quebec. Mario Dumont was great but his team was inexperienced. There is no such thing as a new idea from a socialist. It is, and will always be, tax the rich and give everything to the poor. In this case, tax those who went out on a limb to try and make a decent living, then give everything to those who complain about how much a business owner can and does make. Those people who risked everything they had in order to try and better themselves and family, deserve to earn a good living. Good living by THEIR standards, not yours.

Give the NDP a chance to express themselves and deliver their platform promise. It doesn't matter who or what they promise the voters during a campaign run, its the outcome that matters after they've been voted in to perform and deliver what was promised. Congrats to Layton and the NDP. I look forward to a political landscape that is clearly defined. No more centrist fence sitting. It will be nice to have two legitimate parties with clear ideals. I would prefer to have fewer choices between parties that represent the left and the right (separately) rather than more parties with either unclear messages and/or single platform policies. Here is hoping that Quebec is coming back to the fold of equality and fair treatment of every province. Quebec is important to Canada and Canada is important to Quebec. Neither Canada or Quebec will fair well with out each other. Let's also hope Alberta can embrace the rest of Canada as well. Alberta was once a have not province for a very long time. Alberta accepted handouts from the stronger provinces during that time and it is not fair for them to suddenly claim their new found wealth as a provincial privilege. It is time to help your less fortunate sister provinces. If you don't agree then maybe someone should pull out a calculator and start trying to figure out how much the Albertans should give to Quebec and Ontario to pay back their roughly one hundred years of support payments to Alberta. Let the central Canada bashing begin.
