The Conservatives lead the Liberals by more than eight percentage points in the polls as Prime Minister Stephen Harper prepares to square off against his opponents in the English-language leaders' debate on Tuesday night.

A poll released Monday puts the Conservatives in the lead with 39.7 per cent support from surveyed voters, with the Liberals trailing behind at 31.2 per cent and the NDP at 16.8 per cent. The Bloc Quebecois received 7.8 per cent support from respondents, while the Greens had 4.0 per cent.

The Nanos Research poll conducted for CTV and The Globe and Mail also found that 52.6 per cent of the surveyed voters believe policy will play a key part in their decision on Election Day. That means that the Tuesday night debate will provide leaders with an opportunity to target voters who are looking for more information about their party platforms.

Pollster Nik Nanos said debates have the potential to push a party up or down in the polls, as voters can form a strong impression about the way the leaders stack up against one another.

"The debates are key junctures in the campaign because many Canadians tune in earnest to size out and check out all of the federal party leaders," Nanos told CTV News Channel from Ottawa on Tuesday morning.

"But realistically, it's about two things: exceeding expectations and not making mistakes."

The end goal for Harper will be to try to hold onto the Conservative support he has, while Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff and NDP Leader Jack Layton will be trying to paint themselves as a better choice for voters.

Nanos said the Conservative leader will have to confront the issue of a still-unreleased auditor general report that has raised questions about the way Ottawa handled a $50-million infrastructure fund during the 2010 G8 summit.

The Tories say the contents of the final report are very different than a draft version that was leaked to media on Monday.

"We can't underestimate the credibility that the auditor general of Canada has," Nanos said.

"You know when she says something, people listen. And I think it's going to be a key vulnerability for Stephen Harper tonight, he's going to need a very clear answer and I'm sure Michael Ignatieff and Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe are going to be on the offensive and be very aggressive on this particular issue."

Watch live coverage right here on CTV.ca leading up to the leaders' debate, starting tonight at 5 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. PT.

The provincial picture

The Nanos poll suggests the Tories and Liberals are neck and neck in Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ontario. The New Democrats trail these parties by more than 20 percentage points in Ontario and Atlantic Canada, but sit within three percentage points of the Liberals and six percentage points of the Tories in Quebec.

In Western Canada, the Conservatives continue to hold a significant advantage over their opponents, with support from 51.2 per cent of decided voters in Alberta and 45.1 per cent in British Columbia.

Monday's Nanos Research poll is based on a telephone sample of 990 decided Canadian voters, surveyed between April 9 and April 11. It is considered accurate to within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

When are you Liberal posters going to realize: A) any gains an losses on the daily poll from Nanos are WELL WITHING the margin of error, and have been for the last 2 weeks. AVERAGE out the scores for the parties and they are prety much EXACTLY where they were when the Campaign started. Statistically, this poll is UNCHANGED.

I would like to know why the first draft in January was leaked, and not the one in February??????. Maybe the second one was not as damning so they selected the first one. I would also like to find out who leaked the document. Maybe the media would expose that person. Bah haha not very likely. I am voting Conservative, because I don't want to be taxed to death by the liberals.

When ever the leadership ratings are mentioned, Harper's strong lead and Michael Ignatieff's failure to impress Canadian, the media has only one message: Those devilish Conservative ads have unfairly and we fear permanently influenced Canadians' opinion of Mr. Ignatieff. Is it not even remotely possible, after having months and years to observe Mr. Ignatieff that Canadians have taken a measure of the man and found him lacking in those qualities that are required for a role of a Prime Minister? Enough already, we are fully capable for shutting off the noise and forming our own opinions.

Stephen Harper is asking us to give him a majority. With a minority, he gave us a 56 billion dollar deficit, spending tax payers money to subvert civil rights and expensive photo ops for his Conservative Party(G8 and G20) and an inability to follow the rules of a court of law (contempt of Parliament). Now a imagine Harper with a majority. The sneek preview is F35s, more jails, tax breaks for big buisness, less accountability in Parliament and policy driven by a social conservative operatives (dismantling the gun registry). Harper gave us spending on the economy (grudgingly after stating there was money to be made on the stock market at the beginning of the recession) and all those Action Canada road signs. Now that he has done all these good deeds (don't forget part of those good deeds included attack ads), he feels he deserves a majority. And I deserve a CEO's pay for picking up garbage on the street.

She just made sure that it went out the back door instead of the front door.

I'm surprised how the Tories keep lying and manipulating by saying "the contents of the final report are very different than a draft version that was leaked to media on Monday." How could that be? I really wish this report would be released to expose Harper's gov't for what they really are - bunch of liars, thieves & hooligans. In addition, the Tories went and stole AG quotes directly used to compliment the Liberals on the handling of 9-11 to further lie about the AG supporting the G8 summit in Canada. Stealing quotes to make themselves look better. How low can they go? All I have seen from Harper's gov't is lies, dishonesty and personal attacks. I expect no less from the Conservatives since their platform is so bad that if people really looked at ALL the numbers they would decide to vote Liberal instead.

How can anyone trust this Conservative government anymore? We all see the lies now, we all see the contempt that they've had for parliament and the Canadian people, and this with a minority government, imagine how much worse it would be with a majority. Democracy as we've known it would no longer exist. The three major parties are big spenders, it's just a matter of where you want your money spent. Will it be on billion dollar jets and American style jails, or will it be on families?

What's wrong with a coalition? If the majority of seats in the house are non-conservative (as has been the case for FIVE years now!) and all those non-con MPs are willing to follow a Liberal leader, then that Liberal leader should be Prime Minister with the support of the majority of the house. It's called Parliamentary democracy, and it's what we practice here in Canada. That's why millions all over the world want to come here!

I see pointless election all the time.Well if it's pointless why can it happen? Because the Government SUCKS. Harper hasn't instilled trust into the minds of Canadians. Soon he will only have the die hard Conservative supporters, and that won't be enough to save him.I think he will have less power now even if he does win. And with his crap record on being truthful they'll most likely be found in contempt again and we'll just have another election in a few more months. Hopefully we get a minority Liberal government, I think between Liberals NDP, and Green we'll see more issues be resolved and progress made.Harper had his chance, his government was found in contempt, he shouldn't even be running again. Some people may not like the way Ignaitieff looks or talks, or whatever. But at least he hasn't been a failure at PM like Harper has.(Ex-conservative)

I think we may end up with another Conservative minority. Most Canadians just don't trust the Harper lead Conservatives and see their very pronounced anti-democratic inclinations. Hopefully people in BC will also see the Senate reform proposals as equally anti-democratic and unconstitutional. BC has fewer senators than New Brunswick. With an elected senate we will really be second class Canadians. On this Jack Layton is absolutely right. Abolish the Senate! It irks me every time a senator is spouting off in the media knowing how they got their job off their political connections and its us who are paying for them.

This debatye will not be a debate but a repeat of the last one, minus May,and thank you for that. Now if we can lose the bloc leader then we would have a debate about Canada.Any money the bloc will just whine about What Quebec wants but you never hear what Quebec has to give to Canada. That is because they have nothing to offer. Now to the debate and i will use that term loosely as we all know what is going to happen. It will be three wantabees ganging up on Harper just like last time. Nothing will get debated because iggy ang layton will constantly butt in loudly and drown out the other. Should be funny watching those three make fools of themselves. I hope Canadians will be much smarter than last time to see what will happen and see through the crap. Then if a minority happens watch the three call a coalition. But here is the catch. They will say we are not forming a NEW coalition. We are just bringing up the old one that has not expired yet. Did you know the old coalition contract they signed does not expire until june2011. Why do you think the opposition called this election. Wake up people and journalist. And for reporters,Why has not anyone asked the opposition parties the expiry date on their contract and why so long for it to expire?

I can't understand why conservative support in BC is so high, the BC liberals are a conservative party hiding behind the liberal name. The BC liberals are in no way associated with the federal liberals. The BC liberal web site is blue not liberal red. The BC liberals are made up of social credit, progressive conservatives & reform alliance, they have destroyed our province. Who ever leak the report deserves the merit of Canada, a true Canadian exposing the lies. The most disturbing issue is the conservatives using Shelia Fraser's praise for liberal management after 911. Harper & team used her words directed at the liberals to describe the conservative party. Criminal charges are pending, Shelia is a good honest Canadian, it's totally unacceptable that the conservatives slandered her.

That people is illegal!!If you had listened to Iggy's interview, you would see that he too jumped the gun by some of the things he said concerning the AG's office!! If you think they are squeaky clean you better check a little deeper, and get yourself better informed. The second document leak was also wrong. Furthermore, Duceppe and Layton have been in politics long enough to know that Harper does not have a copy of the final report as parliament is not sitting so the final audit is not available to anyone!!! It is pathetic that the opposition and the media even brought this matter into the election without evidence of their accusations. Be very wary of politicians verbal assaults people. I wonder if the opposition is protected by slander when an election is in progress as they are when parliament sits?? This would be interesting to know. I will have to research this one.

Folks that tirade about corruption need to pick up the dictionary. While you can critique this government on its openness if you like, despite that on Day 2 of this Opposition-created, led and trumped up 'Contempt' hearing - two Cabinet Ministers brought thousands of pages of material, quotes, estimates, backgrounders - that the Opposition claimed were withheld (and the reason for this pointless $300 million election) - and the Coaltion of the undemocratic voted down the Government anyway (which is all they wanted in the first place) ... you cant reasonably claim corruption. Hello ... Shawinigate, Sponsorship Scandal ... hundreds of millions sent directly to the pockets of Liberal supporters ... how soon we forget. We have an honourable government now, thank goodness.

Reguardless of how the leaders do in the debate, I don't think it will make much diffrence in the polls. I think most Canadians have already made up their minds that they would prefer to give one party a blank cheque, which will cost us billions of dollars, just to save the 3 or 4 hundred million in election costs. Inspite of all the childish behavior we have seen in Ottawa for the past 6 or 7 yrs, Canada was doing better with its economy than most, and it was done with a minority government in place. Neither the Conservatives or Liberals, have proven by their past records, that they can be trusted to govern this country with integrity and honesty. They have both been mixed up in lies and scandles as far back as anyone can remember. So I think Canadians should think very carefully about whether they really want to put one of these two parties in total control of their country.

Harper and his Conservative government do not have integrity. It only wants to win a majority government; it does not seem to care about average Canadians. Sorry how did the conservatives per se benefit from the G20 summit? Last I checked most people were not pleased with that outcome. Also most non-partisan people are getting tired of this fighter jet funding crap. So they lied about the price of jets. Big deal. Lying about buying a military asset is a little different than lying about bribing Quebec. I agree with you that a lot of conservative tactics are questionable to say the least, BUT at least they're competent. I mean with the liberals you get the same immoral tactics, but somehow they never get things done right either. I think judging by the polls most people have woken up to this reality.

Who is prepared to answer to Canadians as all election members are just that - elected by us so they work for us and not the other way around. 3. Leaked documents or otherwise - provide the information to Canadians and let us decide whether or not the content is important. The country is full of economists, accountants and financial experts so I do not believe Canadians need to be told what they can and can't understand and decision for themselves. 4. As this is a federal election, I would prefer to see much less about the individual provincial party politics and more about health care, defense spending, etc. Everyone will require the use of our health care system and you can use Mr. Klein as a perfect example of this so think about it.

This government have constantly neglected the needs of veterans. They have interfered with the civil service and harassed civil servants in the performance to their duties. Opponents of the Conservatives, including academics, have been systematically harassed. Funding has been denied to any group that doesn't follow the Conservative agenda.
