OTTAWA — A Canadian who is an avid traveller and keen photographer has been detained in Burma, but the man's sister says the family has few details.

Ron Zakreski's sister Brenda confirms the 62-year-old is being held by police in Burma.

Foreign Affairs in Ottawa will only say a Canadian has been detained and diplomats in the southeast Asian country are providing consular assistance.

Brenda Zakreski says her brother, from Vancouver Island, was apparently detained on March 24th.

All the family has been able to get from Foreign Affairs is that officials are aware of her brother's detention, said Brenda Zakreski.

"People are working on it, they don't tell us much either."

No family members have had any contact with him, Brenda Zakreski said.

"Nobody talked to him, he's in the middle of nowhere, it's not a tourist-area."

Brenda Zakreski says her brother is an avid traveller and a keen photographer.

"He's been taking pictures all over the world."

An Indian media report says Zakreski has been charged under Burma's immigration act and he reportedly appeared in Myawaddy Township Court on Thursday.

Officials in Ottawa won't confirm the reason for the detention or whether Zakreski has been charged.

I feel that if certain organs were in demand, less effort would be made to revive people. Am I being silly? Not really. I had a bad experience in hospital when my heart stopped, the doctors tried to revive me and failed. They stopped and said I was gone. I came around on my own when the nurse was giving a final BP reading of 'zero'. I heard her declare me dead! It was all I could do to shake my head but they never caught on til I was able to open my eyes. You should have seen them scramble then! I thought the nurse was going to faint. The thing is, I think we may write people off too soon when there is something of value to be gained from them.
