Volunteer and Professional Firefighters risk their lives for us without question. Sadly, they sometimes do make the ultimate sacrifice. My condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues.

Probe begins into blaze that killed 2 Ont. firefighters

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating a fire at a dollar store in Listowel, in southwestern Ontario, that claimed the lives of two volunteer firefighters.

The blaze broke out on Thursday around 3:30 p.m. at the Dollar Stop in the town's centre. Witnesses say the fire appeared to start on the roof of the building, where work may have been taking place.

Listowel Volunteer Fire Department members Raymond Walter, 30, and Kenneth Rea, 56, were killed when they entered the fire-engulfed store to search for any shoppers left inside. It appears part of the roof collapsed on top of the men.

Ontario Provincial Police eventually searched the building and found the men's bodies. They were removed from the site a day later, before a crowd of about 100 onlookers and dozens of firefighters standing at attention.

Chris Williams with the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office said that a structural engineer had been called in to advise on how to safely recover the bodies. Some of the walls of the building were "at risk of collapse," he said.

When not working for the volunteer fire department, Rea worked at a car dealership. On Friday, his wife Louise told southwestern Ontario radio station AM980 that her husband was dedicated to his family and the fire department. The couple had three children and three grandchildren.

"He was very family oriented; he loved his kids; he loved family," Rea said. "He loved the fire department -- that was his life."

Walter was also married and worked as an accountant.

Several politicians have offered their condolences to the men's loved ones.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said that he "was deeply saddened" to learn of their deaths.

"These were remarkable individuals -- heroes who volunteered to do life-threatening work to keep their communities safe," Harper said in a statement.

Premier Dalton McGuinty called the deaths tragic and "a solemn reminder that we must never take their sacrifices for granted," he said in a statement, referring to volunteer firefighters.

On Thursday night, North Perth Mayor Julie Behrns said the men's deaths had saddened the community.

"We thank all of our volunteer firefighters and their families for their dedication protecting us," she said.

Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman, who spent 25 years as a volunteer firefighter with Southwest Oxford, said the news hits home.

"It's just hard to imagine what they must be going through and the pain of all the 'what ifs," he said of the men's families. "Volunteer firefighters give their time to help neighbours... and firefighting is a family."

Listowel is about 200 kilometres west of Toronto.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the families of the firefighters who lost their lives in such a horrendous fire.
I hope they check the firemans equipment also and structures of buildings to make sure in case of a fire that there is not a higher potential of the building collapsing. We should also remember that space debris is causing fires on roof buildings, forests etc. There are 400,000 pieces of man made debris circuling at earth level.
There is a site called raisdebris where all of this information is logged.

When bad things happen, most people get the hell out. These dudes, they go in, time and time again. And there is nothing fun about fighting fires. Calling them heroes is not really adequate and I can't imagine were we would be as a society without people who are willing to sacrifice everything in order to keep thier friends and nieghbours safe. My heart goes out to the families of these brave men.

My sincere condolences to the families/friends and co-workers of these brave and selfless men.

On a different note, i could not help but notice the similarities between that fire and the one that took place in regina at the same type of business...both fires apparently started in the roof?

My sincere thoughts and prayers go to these two heroes today, lest we forget our hearts and the goodness that these people do for our communities. I live in listowel and watched this tragic event and never realized up until now how these brave men fight for people they really care about, and even though we may not realize it sometimes. To Mr. Rea's daughter Amy and your family, may you keep strong in faith and hope to see you back to work soon, and with your head held high knowing you had a father that loved you very much.

@Sadness: I was right there with you, up to the time you referred to "right wing" views. Please keep your own politics out of this very sad space and devote all of your thoughts to two brave individuals. And let's not forget that word "volounteer". These people do this very dangerous work for their "love of community".

I spent a number a of years as a volunteer fire fighter and was/am baffled by the risks taken when extinguishing fires. It sounds like the two casualties were conducting a primary search for potential victims. Short of that, why do we insist on heroic actions to save buildings that are tear downs anyhow? Protect nearby exposures, but let the bloody things burn. The moment you see smoke you can write that structure off. I recall a blaze I battled awhile ago... I was in a crawl space looking for hot spots and I got tangled up in some hanging wires. Frightening indeed, especially since my air was running very low. I recall asking "what the hell am I doing this for? I have three kids!" As long as nobody is inside, let the bloody things burn and let the insurance companies compensate for loss.

@ John Hall.

Not the place or time to put your self centered views out there. 2 firefighters have passed as hero's and in Canada, that is and will be forefront. We will allow our Fire Marshall's to do there job. Please honor with condolences and thanks, not right wing views.

My deepest condolences to the famillies of these volunteer firemen. They have regular jobs and do this on there time to ensure there community is safe. Truly, is there any bigger sacrifice?

A tragedy, and contrary to the frivolous 'space debris' investigation, what should be investigated is whether the volunteer firefighters had the appropriate high tech gear available to regular fire departments that might have prevented this, and appropriate training to go with it. I am very saddened by the loss of these men to their families.

As the wife of a firefighter my heart goes out to the community and the families of the fallen men.

I am however rather offended that you would make a comment that makes ligh of the incident in discussion, perhaps this is not the best forum to comment on space debris causing the fire, be that your thought or not it makes a joke out of a very tragic and unfortunate situation.

The probe into the cause of this fire should include the possibility that the fire was started by the impact of very hot space debris. Strong indications are that it started in the roof area, so this fact alone makes it of utmost importance that space debris impact should be investigated. In view of the two fatalities, it is also of extreme importance that all fire service personnel are trained for this eventuality. Space debris is not to be taken lightly; it is real and a serious hazard. If you have further interest put JOHN HALL SPACE DEBRIS in your UK Google search slot.
