MONTREAL — Canadiens' forward Max Pacioretty was released from the Montreal General Hospital late Thursday afternoon and sent home to start his healing, which he hopes does not involve having to think about criminal litigation.

Late Thursday the injured forward tweeted a message that read:

"I sincerely appreciate all of the support that I have received since my injury. I was disappointed that the NHL did not suspend Zdeno Chara. However, I have no desire for him to be prosecuted legally. I feel that the incident, as ugly as it was, was part of a hockey game."

"I understand that this is not my decision. I have respect and admiration for the authorities in Quebec. I simply wanted to make my opinion clear."

Pacioretty was referring to a report that Montreal police was launching a criminal investigation into Tuesday night's bodycheck by Zdeno Chara that left him the young Canadien with a broken neck and a severe concussion.

Montreal Canadiens' owner Geoff Molson called on his 29 fellow owners to join him in a group to analyze safety in the NHL.

"I am willing to play a leadership role in coordinating this group effort," wrote Molson.

Montreal police confirmed on Thursday that they have opened a criminal investigation at the behest of Quebec's director of criminal and penal prosecutions, Louis Dionne.

"The police investigation will be held. Like all police investigations, evidence will be gathered and an investigation report will be submitted (to the DCPP)," Dionne's spokesperson Martine Berube said Thursday.

"(The DCPP) will then evaluate to see whether there's grounds for prosecution."

When asked what kind of punishment might result from the case, Berube said it was too soon to say.

"That would depend on what charges are laid. That's a little difficult to predict at this point."

Pacioretty is recovering from a severe concussion and a non-displaced fractured vertebra he suffered in a hit by Boston bruins captain Zdeno Chara on Tuesday evening.

In recent years, Quebec police have charged at least three hockey players from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with assault.

On Wednesday, Montreal police asked Canadiens fans to stop calling them to file complaints against Chara.

Police said they were inundated with calls from people seeking to file a criminal complaint against the six-foot-nine defenceman.

The calls demanding criminal charges began Wednesday afternoon, shortly after the NHL announced it would neither suspend nor fine Chara.

Police say their emergency call centre started getting flooded around 4 p.m. – after the NHL announced its decision.

A spokesman says police suspect the calls were inspired by a local media outlet that suggested the idea.

The police spokesman described the gesture as irresponsible – and he urged Montrealers to keep the emergency line free for actual life-and-death matters.

He would not speculate, however, when asked whether police might actually investigate the Chara incident.

The incident not only tied up police lines but also landed in the political arena: in the House of Commons, the federal minister responsible for sport called on the NHL to act.

Hockey players charged in Quebec include Jonathan Roy who played for the Quebec Remparts. Roy was given an unconditional discharge by the judge in October 2009.

Patrice Cormier, now a member of the Atlanta Thrashers, also plead guilty for an assault following a vicious elbow to an opponent's head in January 2010. A third Quebec junior player was also charged in another incident but cannot be named upon orders of the court.

Charges unlikely: experts

Legal and law-enforcement experts expressed doubt the police investigation would result in criminal charges.

"This would be the type of case that would be very tough to prosecute,'' said John Galianos, a former major crimes investigator with Quebec's provincial police.

He added that the difficulty facing prosecutors would be establishing Chara's intent to injure.

"I don't think a Crown attorney would prosecute based on the video,'' Galianos said.

The prosecution would also have to argue that the violence of the hit went above and beyond the normal level of violence in professional hockey, said a Montreal criminal lawyer.

"When you get involved in a sport, there is a concept of acceptance of risk,'' said Steven Slimovitch.

"The question is did Pacioretty agree to be hit in that kind of fashion by Zdeno Chara? Was the hit so outside the norm of what is found in the sport of hockey . . . that it's not hockey anymore.

Slimovitch pointed out that while criminal charges have been brought against NHL players in the past for on-ice violence, they have generally involved stick-swinging incidents.

There is little precedent for a bodycheck leading to legal action.

Following the Bruins' pre-game skate in Boston on Thursday, Chara reiterated his claim that he didn't set out to hurt Pacioretty.

"You feel bad when a fellow player gets severely hurt,'' he said. "I know, deep down, I did not do it intentionally.''

If there is no suspension for that awful hit, I belive hockey should turn back into the 1970's ruff neck hockey. Some A-hole throws a hit like that,, clear the bench. The league says it want to stop violence in hockey with no suspension to chara i beleive they are encourging violence and we will see a bloody future of hockey.

The argument should not be about whether Chara's hit was intentional or not. That's beside the point. The real issue is that his actions led to a serious injury and subsequent hospitalization of a human being. Just because he was on skates and holding a hockey stick when he did this does not mean his actions should not have the same serious legal consequences as any one else.In a court of law good intentions won't stop you from doing the time.Try telling a cop who stops you for speeding that you didn't mean to do it and see where that gets you. Chara might easily get away with a tap on the wrist and that's because everyone is saying it was a clean hit and it wasn't intentional. It's a pathetic excuse!!!It's outrageous and insane to let anyone - hockey players included get away with breaking someon's neck.He must be held responsible.

Stephen Harper, if you really are concerned, why oh why is the Ministry of Labout not investigating the rink/NHL for the inadequate workplace safety involved. ie the stanchion?

You have the power and if you do not wield it, then ultimately it is you who will have failed us. Of course the employer (the league) won't do anything. Employers are for making money. We elect governing bodies just for the purpose of enforcing workplace safety. And you are not acting. Please let us all know where you stand on unsafe workplace safety and why 'normal' employers are treated differently than the rich and famous employers .... Yes, these players give implicit consent to fighting and athletic injuries, but I don't think anyone gives implicit consent to being run into a poll through negligent workplace conditions. Remember the luge incident? These things will occur again and our athletes need our protection just like any other worker ...

If I were to do the same thing to someone in the stands I would not have the luxury of saying ask the other guy if he wants charges pressed or not.
No Max this should go beyond what you want , we were subjected to witnessing that and trying to answer very hard questions from our children.

I understand that by hockey standards, the hit was acceptable as long as the player has the puck. Otherwise, any such hit, generates a penalty of sorts. Anything more than that seems a little like overkill. Like previous comments, I agree that the horrific injury was the result of a design flaw and not the intention of the player. This requires changes to the surface and surrounding boards that our atheletes play on.

Can't help but wonder if roles were reversed, a Canadien was the hitter, there would be such an outcry. Criminal investigation, politicians falling over themselves lamenting this "terrible" incident, good grief. Sorry folks, this was a clean hit by accepted hockey standards, unfortunately the glass got in the way. I doubt we will hear anyone take responsibility for the design flaw that resulted in a fair check becoming a serious injury.

You have to understand that Patch is an employee in a corporation. Generally, if you talk bad about coworkers or your boss, you risk the chance of getting fired. Fortunately we do not work for the NHL and can speak our minds. Maybe as Canadians, we should stop playing in the NHL and create a CHL. We have all the best players anyway and will keep the money in our economy. The NHL is run by greed and they do not care about their employees. If we ever worked for an organization that allowed in house violence, we would probably all quit tomorrow. Think about it!

The day the NHL'S head office left Montreal and moved to New York was the day Canadian hockey died! Now you have suits running the show, can you tell? Get rid of Bettman the puppet and make the "Great ONE" the Commissioner. Better still, if they don't get rid of Bettman, all Canadian teams should threaten to boycott playing any American teams, including the play offs. Remember, Bettman said most of the, "rise in concussions in the preliminary data from this season seem to be accident events, collisions, players falling and banging into other things, not from head hits," he told reporters. You may be able to sell that in the US but, not in Canada, were not that stupid.

If everyone is as concerned with player safety (as you're all claiming), Why isn't there a similar outcry to fix the GLARING and OBVIOUS design flaw in the Bell Center?

Second, it's hockey. Hits happen. What should they do, ban checking? Make sure it's only allowed in the middle of the ice where there is no possibility of someone hitting a board (or stanchion pole)?

Thrid, Max had a nice dirty hit on
the Rangers's Mark Eaton. Where's the outcry over that hit?

In any event, no one wanted to see him get hurt, least of all Chara. Hopefully he heals up and gets back to hockey.

i have much love for the game and only a real canadien can appreciate speed and skill but when only 5 teams are Here and the rest down below it just makes financial sense...........

I really question how stupid fans are??????????????? This was definitely an aggressive move(why did the attack take place right in front of the team?Surprised he did not try to attack in front of the Habs team). My hat is off to Air Canada, enough is enough with the violence in sports, what is it going to take to stop it? A child dieing or an adult, something we can not go back on. The public is cold in many cases, with many of them showing the mob attitude. Wondering why some kind of sanction was not given. I am not a sports fan, never have been and never will be. I've been a hockey fan and player all my life and I have always found the tolerance, even encouragement, of fighting and gratuitous violence to be a HUGE negative that would never be tolerated in any other sport. But in Montreal, the world capital of hockey, of all places, I would think that most people would understand that good hard, clean hockey entails risk of injury. It's terrible when it happens and like all reasonable people I wish for Max's speedy recovery. As Liz mentioned below, it's embarrassing that anyone in this great hockey city would seriously contemplate that this is anything but a terrible, unfortunate accident that happens in hockey sometimes.

As a life-time educator, a marital and family therapist, and as a concerned grandmother, I would like to add my voice to those opposing violence in hockey.

Last year my ten year old grandson from Ottawa got hit in the first minute of an intercity tournament that was taking place in Syracuse, New York. His femur was broken. He could have bled out and died if the bone had even nicked the main artery which passes through the center of the femur. Fortunately three of the parents present were Doctors and they jumped on the ice to help. He received wonderful treatment in the local hospital, but contacted C-difficile shortly after surgery, thus extending their stay for a week. My daughter, who was pregnant at the time, and my son-in-law slept on the floor beside him. It took almost a year for him to recover.

The boy who hit him did not receive a penalty for his devastating and life-threatening action. He continued his aggressive behavior and went on to receive five of the fifteen penalties his team amassed in that one game.

My grandson is well and back playing hockey, but in a league without checking.

I almost lost my grandson.

I stand with those opposed to violence in hockey.

Yours truly,

Catherine Cherry M.Ed. M.A.

Dear sir or madam,
Why was there a steel post exposed where it could hurt a player?
Why isn’t the whole rink surrounded by plexiglass?
Why has no one paid any attention to this, the real key factor in this matter?
Is there any question at all that this tragedy could have been averted if the Bell Center had properly protected the unpadded steel post?
I’d love to hear your views.

Why is the Ministry of Labour not all over this?

If something happens on a construction site the employer is immediately under review and huge fines are levied almost certainly to employers for not paying attention to dangerous conditions ....

The stanchion was a very dangerous accident waiting to happen ... the employer, the LEAGUE, should be heavily fined and forced to compensate in this kind of situation .... that is not asking too much as it certainly won't bring back the guy's spine ....
People in Quebec, do some good for your injured player ... redirect your calls to the "Ministry of Labour" not the police!

Hi Guys
I am a South African living in Montreal and got to know the game of Hockey over the last year and a half. I love it. Speed, Skill and timing its all there just like my in my favorite sport Rugby which is as physical or even a bit more. We have phased out violence in the game as far back as the 1990's. Players who does do so gets hefty Fines and are suspended for many games depending on the severity of the offense. Rugby has now evolved into one of the most spectacular sports on the planet. Hockey is beautiful but i dont understand why organizers allow such foul play in this awesome game.

I am a big hockey fan but I do believe calling 9-1-1 was excessive.
The NHL is f***ing blind if they can not see that Chara intentionally pushed Max purposely into the pole. They have to clean up the violence in the game and deal with players who continue to defy the rules. I wish Max the best and I really hope this does not end his career.

I don't watch hockey that much but when I do, I find there are too many fights. Ever watch the kids in the seats watching this? One boy had his fist up as if he was punching.
This kind of injury should not be overlooked. Suspensions and fines aren't working so a team should be made to forfeit a goal and give it to the other team for their player causing injuries. It will make the player think twice before going after a player.

So should Chara have been suspended because he intended to hurt Pacioretty? No. But he should have been suspended for a reckless play that almost cost Pacioretty his life.

Instead, they sent the message that if you insult another player's girlfriend, as Sean Avery did a few years back by calling Elisha Cuthbert—who was then dating Dion... Phaneuf—"sloppy seconds," you get a six-game suspension. (Taken fro Kamal Panesar's blog)

For all the folks ringing 911 to lay complaints against Chara, I have one for you.

If any person dies as a result of the 911 operators being diverted from real emergencies by you selfish people, I trust the authorities will charge you with endangering life by wasting police and 911 time.

All sports have referees/umpires and administrators whose job is to penalise all incidents appropriately. The Chara hit has been judged and no penalty laid. If you don't like the decision flood the NHL with calls not 911.

Now - on with the game.

I agree, calling 911 was a bad idea. They should have filed a complaint directly at the police station if they wanted.

People were waiting to see what the NHL would do, because we had faith in the existing system.

This is an outrage, the hit was clearly intentional. If you look closely at the hit, you will see that Chara pushed Pacioretty's head into the glass extension in the middle of the hit. If Pacioretty did this to Chara, the league would probably suspend Pacioretty for 6 games and fined 25 000 dollars perhaps. Chara may not have a history of aggression, but all story need a beginning and this could be the beginning of an aggressive Chara. Pacioretty did not deserve to nearly have his career ended over one little shove

I'd like to express my complete disgust on Mr. Murphy's decision not to take any actions against Chara. To take no action is basically saying that the NHL is ok with violence and it's only when someone dies that a player will face consequences, which is a very sad truth. I guess a severe concussion and a fractured C4 vertebrae is not a serious enough injury, even though it is unclear what Pachioretty's future will be in hockey. I can't help but feel a certain father of one of the Bruins, who is far up on the NHL food chain (who shall not be named, but it's pretty obvious who I am referring to), had more say in this matter then we're being lead to believe. Also the statement that Mr. Murphy issued about his decision seemed more like an excuse than an explanation. To say that "This hit resulted from a play that evolved and then happened very quickly" and that " Chara has not been involved in a supplemental discipline incident during his 13-year NHL career" is a bunch of malarky. I sincerely hope he never works on a jury, because we'll have a lot of criminals walking the streets. Did Murphy ever take into consideration that Chara said he knew he was in front of his bench right before the hit on Pachioretty and that being in the league for 13 years means he's more aware of his surroundings. Also looking at this years hockey season it was very clear that there's been a personal rivalry between Chara and Pachioretty since a little shove from the 22 year old after a winning goal. All players know about the stanchion, as well as the coaches and it's exact location, so to say things happened really fast is no excuse for the clear shove at the exact moment Pachioretty was in front of the stanchion. I hope more companies that sponsor the NHL speak up like Air Canada and threaten to pull out because of the lack of action taken on this extremely violent hit. I think Mr. Murphy should visit Pachioretty in Hospital and give his lame explanation to Pachioretty and his parents faces of why the person who landed him in hospital and almost took away his ability to walk, gets away scotch free. Somehow I highly doubt that will happen because there actions thus far have been pretty cowardly.

Let's just take a deep breath for a moment and review everything that's been writen in the comments. Firstly, 911? Seriously? That's ridiculous. Second, I'm sure that most of us remember games, from earlier on, "where the players didn't even wear helmets"? Hockey was played as a "true sport". Are you going to tell me that "our skates got faster or our technology in icemaking suddenly made being on the ice, more dangerous? There was a time when the Montreal Canadians team was made of home grown Montrealers. Here we have a Czeck, who hit/interferred a Montreal player, from the U.S. Can I be more crazy and spell out "Culture Shock"?! I mean we have all seen the Rocky movie where Rocky fought against that 7 foot Russian... Is Max our "real life" Rocky? Max, or anyone for that matter, had no chance against a hit from Chara and honestly, we never really will know of his intentions... Come back strong Max. I have a jersey with your name on it and I am not about to put it in the closet...

To G: I AM a Montrealer and to know that fans were tying up the 911 lines to complain about something that happened in the past (as violent as it was) is irresponsible and selfish! People with emergencies were delayed getting help because of this stupid behaviour.

You hockey fans should make up your minds - clips were shown from the beginning of the same game where there were two players fighting and the crowd was cheering!!! Maybe it does depend who is winning the fight! Violence is considered too acceptable in our society now and you can't pick and choose when you agree with it or not. We already don't have enough police to take care of public safety in the streets what with murders, home invasions, etc. - let the Hockey Association take care of this.

I don't mean to troll but so many outsiders comments seem to surround the same thing.

I love the physical Hockey game, it's great, it adds another dimension to every players decisions. You won't go as hard for the puck if you know as soon as you get there you're up for grabs, it's that moment of hesitation that makes hockey so unpredictable.

What is predictable for a player is that when he does not have the puck he is not required to protect himself for these bone crushing hits. As soon as the player is not in possession of the puck he quickly changes his priorities, Max hit the puck away 1 or 2 feet from inside the Canadiens zone, the hit and last minute shove by Chara. Max was a couple of feet before the red line as Max was accelerating passed him. This was a race for the finish line as one car steered the other into a brick wall.

Max had no reason to expect such a late and deliberate hit from Chara. I have no idea why it matters whether or not the 6' 9" player had his skates off the ice of not. Also saying that if Max and just gotten up it would be a different story, right but the reason he didn't just get up it because of the intent.

Assault is assault; we have no laws that exclude the NHL from responsibility, so if we all witnessed it don’t we have the right to call 911? Americans above all others should understand what rights and freedoms are all about. This isn’t about the Canadiens, I don’t see that anywhere in the article. The reason we’re not complaining about the other games is that we saw this one, if you don’t like what you see in your games, feel free to do as you wish.

I don't care if it was Chara's ego or just the adrenaline pumping I’m sure a lot of real life assaults are motivated by the same thing, but don't credit the guy for athletic ability and coordination and tell me that he was just clumsy on this one. Either you're a professional athlete that makes calculated moves and plays or you're not in control of what you’re doing.

From now on I will reffer to all of Chara's good plays and goals as accidents.

Lets say that this was your kid playing hockey and you witnessed a player doing that to your 22yr old son what would you do everyone??? That was a disgusting hit.I think chara should be thrown out of the NHL as an example. Also the police should press charges.

Yes, hockey is a rough game on ice but nobody would try to willingly hurt opposite player, especially not experienced player like Chara. He is being a target of stupid statements and comments...We all are saddened by what happened to Pacioretty and wish him fast recovery but Chara did NOTHING wrong in a game and definitely did NOT mean to hurt anybody. People, stop accusing him! And leave police to spend time and to concentrate on real crimes and assaults on the street...!!! Hockey is a tough game and players will always get hurt, lose teeth etc....

1. Gary Bettman has destroyed the NHL.
2. Kids will be pulled out of the sport moving forward.
3. If Campbell's son was on the ice out cold, would the judgment be the same? Would Bettman still insist it is part of the game and it was a clean hit?

I Support Max P. in his comments,He is Right! Looking at this incident from all camera angles and Chara knew exactly what he was doing. The best angle to see this from is the camera shot from the front of the two players. These players know how to play the Game they are professionals. Thats why Chara came out of his bus to give a comment.... He knew he was in trouble. Chara is known for his dirty hits! The NHL should have done something. The safety and security of players is more important... so why is that part of the ring not have more padding? With all these injuries that are occurring more and more Why isn't the League enforcing protective wear on face masks, or enforcing the fundamental rules of the game. Definitely losing confidence in the decision making of the NHL.

Get a life people! Will we start posting police at every sporting event in case someone is injured and then charge the other person with assault? If this had been a Bruins player that was injured, would you be yelling and screaming for justice? I doubt it! Hockey is a fast moving game, there will be injuries. Does the league need to take a stand on cheap headshots, yes they do. But calling in the cops! Get real. They have far more important stuff to do, like solving real crimes!

Montreal fans who believe Chara should be sued, banned, charged, etc. etc. GET A GRIP ON REALITY! Did Ace Bailey sue Eddie Shore? Did Marc Savard file charges against Matt Cooke? Did Cam Neely petition for a ban of Ulf Samuelson? It's HOCKEY! Not bowling. Injuries happen, fights happen, dirty hits and plays happen. It's a part of the game, for better or for worse. You think because you're from Montreal that exceptions must be made, you get special rules and considerations, you are above the rest of the hockey world. WAKE UP! You're the most despised people/fans in the game and the most hated, classless team in the game! For every Cup and historical point of joy, we can all find just as many blackmarks on the CH. Stop whining and live with it!

Not to side with Chara, because I am a big Habs Fan, but in my opinion the hit was clean. If the check was 1 foot more to the right, Pac. would have hit the glass , just like any other hit and we would not be having this conversation. I doubt Chara had a whole master plan, which he was working on for months to slam Pac right at the edge of the glass, ( he really is not the bright)

Ok for those of you commenters who think MTL is stupid for making a call to the police is either

1- ur not from MTL

2 - don't care about the safety of our players

3- don't care about the message it's giving to our kids and of course to those players who think ya it's ok to be so agressive, i won't be penalized for it

Althoguh perhaps calling the cops was pushing it, it's probably becasue this was their worst case senario seeing as the big heads of NHL allowed for this to happen and allowed for Chara to get away with it. Good job Heads of NHL - Good freaken job!

To those who thin MTL pushed ti too far for calling the cops, I'd like to see if one of your players for whatever team you cheer for gets a hit like this and absolutey NOTHING happens. How would you feel and what would you do?

Max - I'm sorry this happend to you and you didn't get justice out of this. WE the MTL'ers hope you can get out of this in a healthy state. We're all pulling for you and we got your back.

MMr. GI:
---
You obviously don't understand what happened. I could easily make the case that people are just complaining and are stupid for seeing it like that. Unfortunately that's the basic response when you want to deny the severity of something, you followed it textbook.
---

None of what Chara did could have been better, he did everything perfectly from hitting him so long after he touched the puck (which was at the blue line) to skating beside him for a few strides and then all of a sudden it was the right time to shove and then guide Max's face into the glass with the left arm. It couldn't have been more perfect or illegal.

We deal with accidents and accept them, Richard Zednik anyone? (Another Boston cheapshot) But this is unacceptable.

I'm don't know if you think the hockey arena is a separate country, or is this was all sanctioned by the Quebec Boxing Commission, because it's not and it wasn't. If those who profit from the NHL are going to be the ones who decide what's acceptable when it comes to these hits they have to take action. If they don't it will go up the chain, I'm shocked to hear that you think a private for profit company can make the final decision on violence or culpability for serious injury. Tell me why this can't be investigated by the police? Have the laws changed? Is the Bell Center a foreign country?

I remind you that Max Pacioretty is from the USA and Chara is from Slovakia so we're not defending a Canadian, we are defending the game and the safety of players.

It's in all of our best interest to get that out of the game. Not having done it before is not an excuse, we learn that as kids.

Well, it is pretty much a given that Chara will not be in the lineup the next time the Bruins visit. I think it would just be the best course of action all round. He will be kept out of the game due to an "upper body" injury..and we can be pretty sure it will be his brain.

Here's an idea. How about people call the police for reporting DRUG DEALERS, RAPISTS, AND MURDERERS! C'mon people, I feel bad for Max and he certainly didn't deserve what happened to him. But to make it a police matter is rediculous. There was nothing premeditated about it. Chara might have been licking his chops prior to the hit, but I'm almost certain he didn't want to cripple Pacioretty. It should remain an NHL matter, and they certainly dropped the ball on this one

My 12 year old son loves hockey and the Habs, he was glued to the TV screen in total shock when he witnessed the hit. We all were. What are we teaching our kids I know hockey is an agressive sport, but when so many players are getting injured the NHL needs to make this a more serious issue.I agree with one person who wrote the comment of if you injure a player (even if accidental)and he is our for "X" amount of weeks/months, then the person who made that hit should be out for the same amount of time. Why should one team miss out on one of their players, because of another teams player. were not talking about the flu here! And hats of to Air Canada for threatening to stop sponsorship. I would do the same. I don't think the fans calling 911 was the right choice to make, but I also don't think the NHL made the right decision, and passionate fans didn't appreiciate that. I do think that Pacioretty should do what he's got to do, he's the one whos got to live with the major concussion and cracked vertebra and chances of him never tying up his skates again. And NO ONE should have taken that away from the kid, just as Crosby or any other player. The viloence has to stop! There are children that look up to this sport, you have to wonder what is it teaching them?

And now the Quebec police want to investigate the incident!! Honestly, this is just absolutely pathetic! My question is...how would this be played out had the tables been turned? What if it was Pacioretty laying the hit on Chara? I will bet that if that was the case, fans here in Montreal would be saying "oh it was clean hit". Ugh...it this kind of nonsense that makes me want to stop watching hockey. Grow up!!!!

So lets call the cops everytime someone gets hit. What happened was a tragic accident and my thoughts are with max and his family, but that is the chance they take everytime they get on the ice and cash there million dollar paychecks. The glass was supposed to be changed blah blah lets sue the bell center for neglect, get over yourselfs people find something else to complain about

Good I am glad that Montrealers and fans of the NHL took a stand in pressuring the SPVVM to investigate the recent events. However the NHL should suspend Chara for life. With the salaries that they receive a 1, 2, game suspension or fine to any player will not end other players from taking the same action. The NHL should update the rules to the game/ As for our youths who look up to their peers they feel that they can copy their peers. What does this demonstrate. Our love for Hockey and the players were shown Wednesday by all the calls that were made to tbe SPVM but they should have been made directly to the NHL to take action so that others players don"t have there careers ended by vicious and malicious attacks. The only way that this will be resolved is for the NHL TO TAKE IMMEDIATELY ACTION AND END CHARA CAREER SINCE PACRIOCETTY CARRER IS ENDED. LETS STEP UP MONTREAL AND DEMONSTATE OUR LOYALTY TO OUR TEAM AND PRESSURE THE NHL TO ACT.

Nothing was said nothing was done so don't start bringing others into it. I am not a Chara fan at all and he should have known better but the NHL is a joke and you all should have known nothing was going to happen. I feel bad for Max and his family you never want to see that happen. I also feel bad for Chara having to play here again as someone said it best habs fans are psycho. I just hope habs fans don't act like their typical selves and look like idiots throwing things on the ice the next game and bringing the image of one of the most known teams in Hockey down into the gutter.

Once again the Quebec Government weighs in on a hockey game. We all know hockey ids religion in the Belle Province but was it intentional or a fluke hit where the turn buckle was? Chara is how tall on skates. Hey, Quebec, whatever happened to Ace Bailey and the vicious, intentional hit he took from one of your players? That was intentional and proven and your entire province was up in arms over that suspension. Big difference, or is it?

Useless QC government, whichever hands it's in (seperatist or federalist). Sick of them making stupid moves. Let's make a statement the people will like when we know nothing will come of it. We need to get more people who actually care about governing in and the lawyers out.

The cops have better things to do then investigate a clean hit. The hit resulted from a play that evolved and then happened very quickly -- with both players skating in the same direction and with Chara attempting to angle his opponent into the boards. There is no evidence to suggest that, beyond this being a correct call for interference, that Chara targeted the head of his opponent, left his feet or delivered the check in any other manner that could be deemed to be dangerous.

Get over it. Now, if they really want a police investigation because a hit ended up with a dreadful result, OK; but know this -- to do so would fundamentally change the game.

Every incidental high stick that results in a broken orbital bone or every garden-variety trip that results in a concussion or bruised knee would have to be judged and investigated by the same standards. Want that? The players don't. The GMs don't. The fans, unless they're Montreal fans Tuesday, by and large, don't.

I have a good idea for a new NHL ruling. It goes like this: If because of any of your actions on ice, except if you hit another player while shooting the puck on net, you injure another player, you should simply be out for as long as the other player you injured and without salary.

Pretty simple but how effective.

Now some people will tell me, what about real accidents? Listen, if players can score top net while skating at 30 mph, pass the puck around like mad mans, I am sure they can elevate their game to care for each other a bit more too.

What an irresponsible thing for anyone to do.... to dare tie up police lines for such a thing. This hockey thing drives most of us crazy anyway...too much for
space taken up for something that only 30% of the population are interested in.Things are way out of proportion.!!!!!!
I am always glad when the season is over here. It is only then that we can have our downtown back to enjoy. The double Hs are gone(Hockey Hicks)
it will never stop..the violence... even if someone dies.
Careers have already been lost because of it..some have died early deaths as well.
I have the feeling Crosbys career will be a short on due to the hits he taken...
And once again ...to those who called the police... get a life.
Would you call that many times for a suspected rapist or known child molester... No you would not...

If what I saw on TV was not an attempt to murder the injured player, it certainly was a successful attempt at injuring a player so he would probably never get better. It was obvious and ugly and I don't know where the disciplinary people get off on letting this sort of thing go unpunished. Are they trying to encourage more people to come and see the blood sport of Hockey? Which is better no rules or spineless rules? Is this a money grubbing ruling which has happened?

Hockey teams today contract out goons not hockey players. They can't play hockey like hockey used to be and should be played. I sure hope this injured player sues the asses off the Bruins,NHL and the idiot who did this. I would file charges as well and hope justice is served. I stopped watching hockey years ago and this was one of the reasons. I hope he recovers from this vicious attack on his person.

It was only a matter of time before Harper's crew would shamelessly try to earn brownie points by jumping into this.
People should be flooding Bettman's office to vent their disgust with this pathetic ruling.
What's more troubling for me is the silence from Canadiens management and ownership.
They should be ripping apart the league's decision.
And if management and Geoff Molson want to be silent, you'd think there'd be ONE GM in the league that would voice some sort of concern.
I'm sick and tired of reporting, notably from the Toronto Sports Network who slammed Hab fans for wanting blood, defended Chara's hit and reputation, downplayed Pacioretty's injury and were united in believing Zdero didn't deserve a suspension..
I wonder how they'd react if Chara laid out Kessel or Grabovski.
Michel Bergeron wrote a good piece at the RDS site and he came up with an excellent idea.
If Pacioretty's career is done,he should SUE Bettman and the NHL.
Maybe accountability would change the NHL's despicable schizophrenic disciplinary rulings.
