BARRIE, Ont. — Jordan Morrison's friends and family will remember the teen as a caring young man who stood up for what he believed in, even if it meant putting his own life in danger.

Hundreds of mourners gathered in Barrie, Ont., today to pay their respects at Morrison's funeral.

The 19-year-old was killed last month while on holiday in the Dominican Republic.

He was attacked outside a resort nightclub in Punta Cana after he came to the aid of a woman in a bar who was spit on.

Many wept openly as photos of a smiling Morrison were projected on the wall the Hi-Way Pentecostal Church.

During the service, Morrison's brother read a poem Morrison wrote in Grade 9.

"I worry about the world ending," Steve McGuinnis read. "I cry when one of my animals die."

Those who turned out Thursday for a visitation said Morrison was always the kind of person people could turn to for help.

Two men from Montreal remain in a Dominican jail and could face possible charges of voluntary homicide.

Their defence lawyer has said the men were drunk at the time of the fight and did not intend to kill Morrison.

The detained men are Canadian citizen Dmytro Aref Yev and Algerian national Bouzid Redha.

I feel that if certain organs were in demand, less effort would be made to revive people. Am I being silly? Not really. I had a bad experience in hospital when my heart stopped, the doctors tried to revive me and failed. They stopped and said I was gone. I came around on my own when the nurse was giving a final BP reading of 'zero'. I heard her declare me dead! It was all I could do to shake my head but they never caught on til I was able to open my eyes. You should have seen them scramble then! I thought the nurse was going to faint. The thing is, I think we may write people off too soon when there is something of value to be gained from them.
