Prime Minister Stephen Harper's chief of staff Guy Giorno is stepping down, according to a report, leaving a large void in the PMO.

The Globe and Mail reported Giorno's departure on Friday, citing anonymous sources.

The move comes after a tumultuous summer for the Conservatives. The move to abolish the mandatory long-form census and the decision not to extend the contract for the veterans' ombudsman were just two of the recent storms that developed under Giorno's watch, said CTV's parliamentary correspondent Richard Madan.

Giorno, who has been in the role since July 2008, was also the architect of last year's controversial plan to end taxpayer-funded allowances for political party campaigns -- which almost resulted in a snap election.

However, Madan said it's unlikely that Giorno is being pushed out. Madan added Harper has leaned heavily on his chief of staff and the loss will be felt in the PMO.

"Certainly it is quite an impact and losing your chief of staff, your right hand guy, it's a pretty big deal for any leader of any party, whether it be the prime minister, whether it be a premier or whether it be the leader of the opposition," Madan told CTV News Channel.

Giorno, who recently became a father for the second time, reportedly wants to spend more time with his family.

There is buzz on Parliament Hill that Harper will look outside of the typical political elite to replace Giorno, Madan said.

It appears Giorno will remain in his post until the end of the year, at which time there will be a transition period of a month or two before the new chief of staff is brought in.

Madan said Giorno "views politics like a combat sport" and hasn't always been popular, as a result.

"He's a polarizing guy to many people here on Parliament Hill and in particular to some Conservative MPs who didn't like his style," Madan said.

"But on the other hand he's a very effective strategist and he's an effective communicator within the party and his departure will certainly leave a hole at the PMO."

Giorno, a lawyer, worked for former Ontario premier Mike Harris and was a key architect of his Common Sense Revolution.

This guy has played a major role in bringing Mike Harris Conservative Govt to their Knees'.Now his Right Wing ideology has created problems for Harper. The only thing that gets Neo Cons in trouble is when they tell the world what they really think. Good Riddance , Harpers next CANADA DESERVES BETTER

Hey its about time. Look at all the issues that have been knocking the hell outa the polls for the Cons. That issue with not renewing the contract of a guy thats only interest is in how are veterens are treated was a poison pill for them. He was obvously out of touch with the electorate so he should do the pack-sack waltz and move on. I mean when you start losing voters to Iggy something must be really wrong.

My goodness, the Liberal gang are out in force today spewing invective in every direction hoping that something will ring true with the electorate. It seems that a confident, assured leader is an affront to all wishy washy Liberals everywhere and a simple resignation is cause for a major incident. For my part it would be good to see someone less partisan in the Chief of Staff role so he/she could act as a foil to Stephen Harper's take no prisoners style. I'm not saying that Harper isn't light years ahead of the Iggmeister in terms of political smarts and leadership ability but there is always room for improvement. Perhaps Harper should consider a female CoS who might soften some of his rough edges and be more media savvy. Canada finally has a PM we can be proud of if we could just adjust his bedside manner somewhat.

Obviously people can't read the article.... HE has decided to leave this position to spend more time with his family, as he just became a father again. This is a 24/7 job position, event while on vacation the Blackberry stays on. By the way, if he was fired or pushed out, he would be out already, but since he will stay on until December according to the article above, then you can be assured that he not taking the fall for the PM. People, please read the article before making dumb comments

Funny how people react to the news that someone in public life has decided to quit their job. Who really knows what the reason is? Perhaps Mr. Giorno has decided to open a sporting goods store in Haiti? Maybe he wants to spend more time playing video games? I don't know and I don't care. But to label the Prime Minister as the culprit and a "control freak" just shows the level of intellect, or lack thereof, of the political partisans on this site.

Liberals oh Liberals....Here we go. One man decides to spend time with his family and all of a sudden it is "HARPER IS A CONTROL FREAK". Just like Lierals to make something out of nothing. To all the Liberal Hacks that go on this posting site: GET A REAL JOB!

Instead of blaming others, Harper should take responsibility for his actions! But he will not do that, he will yell and scream, say the sky is falling.

As has been said, people come and people go. I'm sure there are plenty of qualified people out there ready to go. I agree with Prof. Pye chart though. The fiberal guy seems to do a good job for Mr. Harper and so far, it hasn't cost the Conservatives a dime. Perhaps the guy has already been hired, although he collects a pay cheque from the fiberals.

Another fall guy for a control freak PM that doesn't like to take any responsibility for his own bad calls. The upside for Giorno is that vacating such a nerve-racking job is a reward in and of itself. He gets his life back now.If you need proof that Harper is out of touch beyond the reach of even the most experienced and intuitive advisor remember he has been talking about forming a majority government while his party has dropped dramatically in the polls. You can't get a guy like that to manage his expectations realistically as countless people have learned over the years all the way back to Harper's days in the Reform Party. It is no surprise that Giorno would want to leave.

This speaks volumes. Either Harper is such a control freak that he can not keep staff or the other possibilty there is a sweet deal waitng for this staffer.

Players come and players go. The Prime Minister is not lacking for credible people to fill the vacancy. I just hope he chooses wisely someone of mature wisdom and discernment, not some political rock jock whose only interest is in the political scorecard. Canada needs a steady and firm hand to continue guiding this country through these turbulent times.

How about getting Liberal spin-doctor Warren Kinsella to fill the job? His work with Michael Ignatieff has helped PM Harper and his Conservatives immensely.
