Five students from Haiti will be studying at the University of Winnipeg this fall, after the earthquake interrupted their studies in their home country.

The U of W is sponsoring the five students, covering the costs of tuition, residence fees, books, medical support and counselling so they can complete their degrees.

A fundraising campaign is underway to cover those costs, and donations can be made at UWinnipegFoundation.ca.

Three students will come from the State University of Haiti and two will come from the University of Quisqueya.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
