SAINT-BRUNO, Que. — Michael Ignatieff travelled through the region south of Montreal on Thursday, meeting supporters and slamming Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

During a stop in suburban Saint-Bruno, the Liberal leader said he's been looking for support on his national tour from Conservatives disappointed with their own government.

And Ignatieff repeated a now familiar phrase he's been using as he crosses the country -- inviting disgruntled Tories to come into the big red Liberal tent.

It was the 126th event of his Liberal Express tour and Ignatieff noted he's already covered 35,000 kilometres.

He told supporters he has been doing politics "in the good old-fashioned way" -- without any photo ops like the one by Prime Minister Harper in the Arctic on Wednesday.

Ignatieff says the event, which had jets flying overhead and a coast guard vessel in the background, cost at least $1 million and was an incredible waste of money.

The Liberal leader told reporters he laughed when the prime minister talked about Russian aircraft being chased away by Canadian military planes on Tuesday.

Ignatieff says people have tried to make him afraid of the Russian bear ever since his childhood, because he's partly Russian.

But he adds it was ridiculous for the prime minister to try to make people believe that without the intervention, the Russian bear would have come into Canadian homes.

For anyone giving Mr. Ignatieff a hard time about the "photo op", be reminded this was a pic selected by the site. He is getting off a tour bus and waving. Judging from the vegetation and clothing, he's not trudging across the tundra followed by camera lemmings or Russian bears, dropping loonies as he goes.

Arctic sovereignty will only be assured by international agreement. Not by flag waving or belligerence. We have more to worry about the US than Russia. At least Russia recognizes our claim to the Northwest Passage. The Americans do not..

Harper refuses to have a public debate or produce a defense white paper . Harper will spend up to $ 16 billion on offensive attack fighter (useless for modern defense) $ 300 million on artic spy satellites for modern defense that can also double as corp. prospectors . Knock the Government for its failings seems fair . Knocking the opposition seems pointless?

What kind of dream world is Ignateiff living in. Of course the Russians are testing our resolve in the North, especially since sea boundaries are to be negotiated. It must be painfully obvious to Liberals that not only is their annointed leader out of touch, he is also dangerous.

Are you serious?
---
The Liberals are scrambling, every liberal paper is rolling out as many negative ads.
---
Tells me they are afraid of Harper going north and winning hearts and minds.
---
Harper has political Capitol, the Conservative management of the Economy bringing back 400,000 net jobs is money in the bank.
---
When Peter MacKay set out a 30 year plan to provide new ships etc. to gradually affordably bring back our navy from total rust, I knew Harper was on track.
It fits his artic vision, our need for protection and undoes the negative legacy of the Liberals rust policy.
-------
I am very happy with Harpers gov't. And I get a kick out of the way he throws bones to the Liberals to keep them busy on the non important things.
---
Mr. Harper, could you change our flag to blue?

Well, I`m no Iggy fan but it did kind of seem ridiculous for Harper to imply that the Canadian air farce turned away Rusian bombers as if they were headed to drop the big one on Saskatoon particular when a joint Rusan-U.S-Canada militarty exercise had just taken place. The Harper government always seems to resort to fear tactics. As if Canadians aren`t smart enough to know we need to be present in the Arctic in order to make our case for sovereinty.

So let me get this straight. The Russians fly into THEIR northern airspace, which boarders Canada's norther airspace, and Harper reverts to 1950's panic. Did everyone head for their bomb shelters? Don't look at the bright light. To the Cons: The "Bear" is not a fighter plane. The Tupolev Tu-95 is 1950's era 4 turboprop engine copied from the B-52 Stratofortress. The maximum speed of the Bear is 575mph, so any sonic fighter can catch the plane including the CF-18.The F-35 is costing Canadians (139Mil EACH) more than three what the same plane is costing Australia (40 Mil EACH).Neither is something to be proud of.To the Libs: Get a grip. Tell me how you would do things differently, not just what Harper does continuely wrong.

It is not that the CF 18's are not good enough to intercept the Bears up nort as well as on our east and west coasts, it is that they are long in the tooth and will need to be replaced in another 6 to 8 years. The F35 has been chosen as most suspected it would be way back in 1998 when the Liberal Gov't of the day got us involved in the program. I find it very hypocritical when current Liberals play politics with this.....this is the ONE thing the Liberals did right for the CF! They should be proud of this accomplishment.....yet..it is apparent...there is NO pleasing a Liberal!

I am getting a little tired of all of this pointless criticism from the Liberals......Stephen Harper has his ideas and he has reasons for them and he has an agenda that he thinks will benefit the country and he is working to promote that agenda. History will judge his effectiveness. His problem is he is taking too long to implement new policies. For example, we have been hearing about Arctic Icebreakers from Tories and Liberals for years and have seen nothing concrete. That is a problem. From Mr. Ignatieff, we hear nothing but condecension, which is pathetic. Does he have even one idea on how to deal with the Arctic in terms of Defence, Resource extraction, Climate change, Native rights and all the other issues? Mr. Ignatieff: If you want to be leader, then come up with some ideas and policies, and fight the fair political fight. But please stop the childishness. PM Harper: If you are going to build even one small icebreaker, then just do it. If it is going to take Canadian bureaucrats 5 more years to design one then buy one from the Russians in the meantime. They know what they are doing in the North.

Iggy should go back to his glorious republic and leave us sill 'backwoodsmen' to our own devices. The man makes my skin crawl. All the Tories (and NDP) I know are extremely happy he is at the helm of the Leftists...er Liberal Party.

" that enables our Forces to meet Russian challenges in our North. " Dear PMO : Thanks for demonstrating your prowess with 1950 (Korean War ) weapons systems . I would sleep better if you also had knowledge or an antidote for more modern offensive weapons . (1960 to present by a dozen different nations ) i.e.The submarine carries twenty SS-N-30 Bulava (2005 ) intercontinental, ballistic missiles. Range is 8,300km with accuracy (CEP) of 500m .Each missile consists of ten independently targetable multiple re-entry vehicles (MIRV's), each with a 100kt nuclear warhead. ( under water , under ice or tied up in mothballs )

Iggy continues to hit the nail on the head by pointing out the lies and useless garbage we get from the Harpercrites. Iggy has won hearts and minds this summer as he heads toward being the next PM.

But wait a minute, I thought the CF-18's weren't sufficient enough to patrol the borders? Apparently, we don't need an F-35 superduper fighter jet to send the Russian Bears back! Or maybe it was just a routine flight of theirs like they've been doing for the past 30 years and there is no such threat? But hey, what's a million bucks for a flyby, when you've committed $9 BILLION BILLIONS more in maintenance contracts for a dozen 'Aston Martin's' when all you needed were 'BMW's'.

I'll have to accept Michael Ignatieff's opinion that "jets flying overhead and a coast guard vessel in the background" are an incredible waste of money. If there's one thing Liberals are world-class experts on it is wasting money. Look at he gun registry program as just one example... Until he agrees to shut that down his tent isn't going to be big enough to include me.

Ignatieff's favourite topic is how Harper is wasting money. His own Liberal buddies want to keep a long gun registry that will waste millions every year, but because he has to keep the voters in Toronto happy, that's OK.. He should maybe give his buddy McGuinty a few tips on how not to waste taxpayers money. but really it's not something a Liberal can do. It seems that they are hard wired to Tax and Spend.

Yah I'm sure that because he is part Russian people have tried to make him afraid of the Russian Bear ever since he was a kid. Another ridiculous statement. Iggy would love for Harper to sit back and do nothing to protect our border so that when there is an incident he and his band of hypocrits can jump all over the government. Come on, if you want to criticize the government, use something substantial. Me think he doth protest too much.

Ignatieff needs to learn that we can't just let fighter planes from other countries invade our airspace, even if they probably weren't going to attack. Is Iggy hinting that he would have just let them fly in?

I am looking at a photo of Iggy with a stupid grin on his face waving from his bus to all his "fans" while reading about him criticizing Harper's photo ops. These are the kind of statements that make hin look foolish and that is why his own "supporters" won't support him. Makes me laugh! he is supposedly an intellect but you'd never know it.

Well Iggy, I hope YOU have a plan for dealing with Russian encroachment on our Arctic North, because it's only going to get worse in the months and years to come with global warming and the potential of Canada's North for fossil fuel extraction. Joking about the big "Russian Bear" and making fun of the Prime Minister's comments about our Canadian Air Force is NOT a plan...

I think he was pushed to take matters into his own hands. I have a teenage son and if he was involved with a drug dealer I would be furious and try anything to save him like this father did for his daughter. Why do police often say they can't do anything until it's too late? Whether it be a drug dealer or an abusive spouse, the police can't seem to do anything until something really bad happens. In this case they could have raided the drug dealers home and arrested him. The whole town knew what was going on in that house but yet the police chose to do nothing. Release this man and give him a medal for doing the right thing by his daughter. I can't wait to see the episode on W5, I will certainly be watching this one.
