Nine people injured Sunday in a deadly Ontario bus crash will be coming home on Monday, while three others will remain in hospital.

A woman, identified as Darlene Goodfellow, was killed and 12 others were taken to hospital on Sunday when a bus hit a guard rail near Woodstock, Ont. and spun into a ditch.

In a grim twist, four of the passengers on the bus were firefighters who had been injured in a separate vehicle accident on Friday, when they were returning from a firefighting competition in Windsor.

Their families had gone to visit them in hospital, and the Sunday crash occurred as they were all returning home to Napanee.

The woman who was killed in Sunday's crash was the wife of David Goodfellow, one of the injured firefighters who still remains in hospital, said Napanee Mayor Gordon Schermerhorn.

"He has some broken bones and he's going to be there for a few days, but our thoughts are with him and we're doing everything we can to help him and the three girls," Schermerhorn told CTV's Canada AM on Monday.

He said a senior manager from Napanee has flown to London to be with the victims of the crash and to keep the town updated on their condition. After the crash the injured were taken to hospitals in the western Ontario towns of Woodstock, London and Ingersoll.

He said Napanee is struggling to deal with the tragedy, but will pull through.

"We're going to get through this. We're a small community, a tight-knit community that works together so I'm sure we will survive this," Schermerhorn said.

Napanee's acting fire chief, Ian Shetler, and his wife were among the injured.

Rebecca Murphy, a spokesperson for the town of Napanee, said the passengers sustained injuries ranging from cuts to broken bones. The passenger with the most severe injuries suffered a dislocated hip and fractured vertebrae.

The crash remains under investigation by the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation team and Oxford County OPP officers, Murphy said. The cause of the crash is not yet known, though reports suggest the road was wet at the time.

The bus was chartered from McCoy Bus Service in Kingston, Ont. The company said it is co-operating with investigators.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
