Respected journalist Lisa LaFlamme has been chosen to succeed Lloyd Robertson as the anchor of the country's most-watched newscast, CTV National News.

LaFlamme, CTV's current National Affairs correspondent, will assume the full-time anchor title later next year, after a period of transition in which she and Robertson will share the anchor position.

"I don't think it's actually sunk in yet, really, because it's such a daunting concept, to replace Lloyd Robertson – I mean, it's Lloyd Robertson," LaFlamme said Friday afternoon in a series of interviews the two journalists held following the announcement.

"Obviously, I am honoured and humbled by all of this," she said. "It's really overwhelming and there's been a lot of high-fiving in my family and a lot of excitement in the team I've been a part of for so many years."

The promotion is believed to make LaFlamme the country's first full-time female anchor in one of the three major English-language national newscast.

LaFlamme began her broadcast career at CTV's CKCO affiliate in her hometown of Kitchener-Waterloo in 1988. There, she worked as a local reporter until 1997.

After time as an anchor for CTV Newsnet (now CTV News Channel), LaFlamme later co-hosted CTV's Canada AM from 2001 to 2003.

A hard news journalist at heart, LaFlamme has reported from some of the world's most fascinating locations, covering everything from wars to elections, to natural disasters and sports events. Most recently, she recently played an integral part of CTV's national broadcast team at Vancouver 2010 as co-host of Olympic Daytime.

LaFlamme has received five Gemini nominations in the Best News Anchor category and has won several RTNDA awards. She's also received an honourary Doctor of Laws degree from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ont. and was awarded the Meritas-Tabaret Award for Alumni Achievement from the University of Ottawa.

LaFlamme has been a regular fill-in anchor CTV National News with Lloyd Robertson since 2003. Robertson said Friday he was proud to hand over the reins to LaFlamme.

"I am so proud of Lisa and so very happy for her," said Lloyd Robertson. "She's an extraordinary talent and a wonderful human being. Canadians will appreciate it's the right choice."

Robertson, 76, surprised many Canadians by announcing his retirement Thursday night.

The veteran anchor has been a familiar face in Canadian living rooms for almost 35 years. Famous for ending his nightly newscast with the sign-off "That's the kind of day it's been," Robertson has been voted Canada's most trusted news anchor by TV Guide readers 11 years straight.

"You can overstay, and I didn't want to do that," he said Friday afternoon. "I wanted to go out on a high, and I think we've achieved that, because the newscast is doing very well and we've got an excellent replacement."

The hardest part, Robertson said, was making the decision and setting a timeline for the transition. "I'm relieved today, because to me, the toughest part is over. The rest is going to be easy now."

Robertson stressed he will still keep a hand in the news. "I'll probably continue for a while with W5, which I enjoy doing, and I'm available for other things around the network."

His memorable career has spanned 50 years, beginning in 1952, at CJCS Radio in his hometown of Stratford.

After moving into television in 1954 with CBC, the newscaster went on to anchor CBC's national news program in 1970. In 1976, he joined CTV News with co-host Harvey Kirck, before taking over the anchor chair solo in 1984.

In 1995/96, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) awarded Robertson the Gold Ribbon Award for Broadcast Excellence and in 1998, inducted him into the CAB Hall of Fame. He's won multiple Gemini Awards, and in 1993 the Radio Television News Directors' Association (RTNDA) honoured him with the prestigious President's Award.

While Lloyd will certainly be missed, it is time for him to enjoy his retirement. He has worked hard and it is well deserved. I had said this morning that I thought Lisa would and should get the position. Needless to say I was thrilled with her announcement to replace Mr. Robertson. She is dedicated, hard working and she exuberates the love of her job whether it is a light story or a heart rendering one.I wish only the best for the both of them.

She left her home town 12 years ago and worked Canada AM for 3 of the years in Toronto. I am sure she is a wonderful human and a good announcer, however, the CBC should lay off describing here as a "hard bitten" reporter for a while... she not quite Walter Cronkite yet.

CTV trusted news source is right. I really started trusting CTV more than CBC after I saw a video clip of Lloyd Robertson reporting about the Bildeburg meeting that took place in Ottawa way back when. I thought good for him he's not afraid to tell the truth and report that such a secretive meeting was taking place. Sorry to see him go, but if he chose Lisa LaFlamme as his successor then she'll be good too.

I was wondering when Lloyd would hang up his skates. As for Ms. Laflamme, I don't know why CTV thinks she needs a breaking in period. She has often anchored newscasts. One wonders, though, if CTV would let a woman stay on as anchor well into her 70s? Time will tell perhaps?

Not a solid choice. Am a huge fan of Lisa, but doing live reporting isn't her strong suit. She didn't perform well during the Olympics, especially during the opening ceremonies, it definitely demonstrated that she needs more time. She is a bit too sensationalist when she does report, but not yet ready to anchor the desk of a national newscast. I am baffled that they didn't use someone like Ken Shaw to replace Lloyd.

Lloyd Robertson would be a tough act to follow for anyone else-- but Lisa Laflamme's one of the few on Canadian TV who will continue that tradition of excellence in evening news. Great choice! Not surprising, given Mr. Robertson has taken so many evenings off this past winter, with Ms. Laflamme filling in-- it's almost as if the transition's already started.

This is excellent news. For years now I've seen Lisa give in-studio and field reporting of the highest quality. She always seeks and presents the benefits of a comprehensive awareness, she is aware of expressing situations in development, she is clearly never biased on the right of left politically like much news is on US channels. Lisa is clearly highly competent in many areas, she's a great communicator, assertive and tactical questioner and journalist and will be a top quality anchor for CTV. She has a character you could describe as "everything activated" and in balance. She's done far more than just pay her dues. I'm hoping that she still has a role in the full range of journalistic efforts and isn't there simply to read the late news. Her skills and presentation appeal are too great. Well done, CTV, excellent choice!

I think Lisa is about as good a choie as anyone else who might have been qualified. But I do take the post by "Chris" quite seriously.News anchors need to have qualities that attract and hold the attention of audiences. But it's not thejob of people who read the news,to make the news,or give the news a political slant. And really, the face you see on TV is not usually the face of the people who do the serious research that gets the story to the air. They do their job, that is,they READ the news. Almost always it is somone else who determines the quaslity of the news itself, or the factual truth of the story. I remain troubled by how many people are willing to accept the merging of entertainment and news. They are not the same.Being famous, good looking,or funny does not mean you are even remotely qualified to create or advocate public policies that impact everyone. So,for those who want "real" news, expect to have to do some digging of your own.Investigative journalism is still going on,but the programs that discuss these issues are less entertaining. And the lack of celebrities presenting thse "real" news items in a non partisan way suggest to me that people really want entertainment or advice more than they want real news,or real discussions about the news.

I liked Lloyd and wish him well, and Lisa wil be fine. But I can't help but wonder, what is this Canadian apparent obsession with TV news readers. Are they really so important to us? I mean we hold them in so much regard we make them Governor Generals. Twice! Personally, I can't stand CBC's Manbridge - his condascending manner is pitiful. How about we pay attention to those that MAKE the news, rather than those who read it?
