About 1,000 people gathered in front of British Columbia's legislature in Victoria to greet Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, on Friday evening.

The crowd braved light rain as B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell received the British royals.

"For me this is what I thought was possibly my fifth or sixth visit, but the premier tells me it's my fourth, which just shows ... it's what happens when you get older, ladies and gentlemen," Charles quipped.

The 60-year-old prince also remarked on the province's rugged beauty, calling it a "remarkable part of the world."

The couple arrived from Toronto's Pearson International Airport, where they shook hands with various dignitaries before waving goodbye and boarding their plane.

Earlier in the day, the royals experienced the smells and sounds of country life as they opened the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.

Charles then visited the Evergreen Brick Works, a project seeking to bring nature to Canada's cities.

After their stops in British Columbia, the couple will visit Montreal and Ottawa, where they will end their tour Nov. 12.

The 11-day tour is their first visit to Canada as a married couple.
