EDMONTON — Edmonton's Valley Zoo says an independent veterinarian has ruled that moving the city's lone elephant could threaten the animal's life.

The vet, Dr. James Oosterhuis, says Lucy has breathing problems that would make travel perilous.

The city released the opinion ahead of a visit this week by game show host Bob Barker.

He and other celebrities, including William Shatner, have argued that Lucy's isolated existence is tantamount to torture.

They are urging that she be sent to live among elephants in a refuge in the United States.

Lucy is 34 -- the average lifespan for such animals is 45 years.
