CTV cameraman Hugh Haugland and helicopter pilot Roger Belanger of Mont Laurier died Wednesday morning in a helicopter crash.
Belanger, an experienced pilot in his 60s, was giving Haugland a tour of the damage inflicted by Tuesday's tornado when the helicopter went down next to Route 117.
Hugh was 44 years old, the father of two girls and the son of former CTV anchorman Bill Haugland.
Jed Kahane, Director of News and Public Affairs for CTV Montreal, worked closely with Hugh for nine years when Kahane was the Montreal correspondent for CTV National news.
He says Hugh was well-loved and will be sorely missed.
"Hugh was, you know, a fantastic cameraman ... with incredible passion for the news business and for the people that he covered," said Kahane.
He was so dedicated to the job that Hugh had actually been working for the past few weeks with broken ribs and a cast on his wrist following an off-road bicycling accident.
Bill Haugland lives in Vermont but visited the CTV Montreal offices on Tuesday, the day before his son's tragic death.
He says trying to cope with the sudden death is very hard.
"Everybody's tearful and it's sort of like being hit with a club," said Bill. "You can't think straight. Trying to connect the dots is very difficult."
Hugh is survived by his common-law spouse Francine Maillé, and his daughters Lianne, 14, and Evie, 19, from a previous marriage.
Soon after Hugh's death, CTVglobemedia CEO Ivan Fecan issued a statement to the network.
"On behalf of everyone at CTV News and CTVglobemedia Inc., I extend our deepest condolences to the family of Hugh Haugland, who was tragically killed today while covering a story for CTV News in the Laurentian mountains.
A dedicated CTV employee for the past 24 years and the son of former CTV Montreal anchor Bill Haugland, Hugh has been part of the CTV family for many years. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Hugh's family, loved ones, friends and colleagues at CTV Montreal.
Hugh's rich career and love of life will live on through the Hugh Haugland Memorial Scholarship Fund.
To make a donation to the fund, please call 514-848-2424 ext. 3817, or fill out the online form, and on the line that says "direct my gift to a specific scholarship/fund" please write in "Hugh Haugland Memorial Scholarship Fund."
CTV also extends our condolences to the family of Roger Belanger, the helicopter pilot who was also killed in the crash.

Being 35 years old and growing up without a Father and spending time in foster homes, you were pretty much the one male figure I would see as a constant in my life as I grew up. I truly am saddened by your loss as I always felt you were an extended member of my ''family''. May God bless you and your family and may your suffering be brief.

I am sorry to hear of your tragic loss. As a fellow camera/video enthusist... I'm sure he was a hard worker and will be missed buy many people.
For the Belanger family...
I am sure Roger was doing what he loved. Something all people hope for in life but not many get to do... rest in peace, to both.

I can’t comprehend just how sad you must feel
For the loss of someone you love.
This sorrowful time must still feel unreal
And you’re looking for strength from above.
I hope, from my heart, that your pain will decrease,
That your spirit will gain strength again,
And I pray that your faith will create inner peace.
Bon courage.

He was mindful of personal space, he shared our grief, and we both understood our respective roles and the jobs we had to do. Hugh never crossed the line. He would put down the camera so he could shake your hand, lend a smile when you needed it most, and acknowledged what a difficult job we had. He was a class act, and we will miss him. Our hearts go out to his family.

Not sure where to send this, but I wanted somehow to give praise to Mutsumi Takahashi . We could see how difficult it was for her to give the news of Hugh Haugland's death live on the noon news. But, even though this was probably one of the most difficult newscasts she has had to give, she gave it with her usual excellence and professionalism. My heart goes out to her. I am sure Hugh was a friend, and being the son of her long time co-anchor...I am sure this death hit her hard.
Mutsumi is something special. Thank heavens she loves Montreal, or we would have lost her years ago to one of those BIG US stations.
Sincerely, Elizabeth Dakin

We never worked together directly, but for years, we were on the same story just about every second or third day... and it was always good to see him there. You don't always think that about other crews -- but you did about Hugh.
I told Hugh I thought his father was the default for a TV news anchor. Bill Haugland was the person I grew up watching, and he was what an anchor was supposed to be. Honest, authoritative and strong. (We saw HOW strong yesterday with his interviews.)
I should have also told Hugh that he was the default for TV news photojournalist. Talented, creative, dedicated, positive and level-headed. It's not a natural mixture... but it was Hugh.
I still can't believe the whole thing.
My boys went to bed tonight thinking about you and your daughters, Hugh. God bless.

Hugh showed an obvious affinity for the arts as well as his talents early on in our education. I remember once, the night before a term project was due for a course named “Scene Design”, Hugh and I each built a Maquette depicting stage and scene using whatever we could find around my apartment. Hugh Passed that course but soon after decided to leave College to begin working for CFCF on Ogilvy Ave., on call, as a stage hand. He never looked back from that point on and relished every day he had on the job.
Together, between classes at the Brasserie Bellevue in Ste. Annes, we also coined the phrase a “quick six”. Our friendship was timeless and never in dispute. Stories of his personal encounters with others are that which he willingly befriended many people. He did just that …to everyone. He also supported those around him through his kindness.
I will always remember moments like the days he shared with us at the Hill, repairing the stairs to the cabin on the Hill, the Dead concert in VT., his wedding, the birth of his children, his “out of the blue” phone calls before leaving for a disaster zone in far away places and more. We were effortlessly brothers.
I have known Hugh throughout his adult life and I will undoubtedly miss his friendship tremendously. I offer my deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences to Bill, Linda, Matt, James, Heidi, and Hugh’s mother. To Evie and Lianne who were his most important priority in life. Lynn, my heart goes out to you as you console your daughters. To Francine and her two daughters my love and support.
Now raise your glass
Cheers to Hugh

As someone who had the privilege of working with Hugh since he started at CFCF,
he was a wonderful human being with a great sense of humour, a real pleasure to be around and work alongside. It did not matter if it was holding a camera or editing footage, Hugh truly loved what he did. He was very talented and a true professional, dedicated, hard-working an all around nice guy.
For all of us fortunate enough to have known Hugh, it is a sad day for us all.
We should remember Hugh for his big heart, funny stories, his guitar playing and for making our lives that much better for having known him.
My heart is with everyone at CFCF. To Bill, Hugh’s daughters, and Francine my deepest sympathies

I never actually met Mr. Bill Haugland, but I did watch him every night, for 20+ years (Pulse News). It's almost like he's part of the family. So, like many other Montrealers, it feels like we lost a loved one or dear friend.
His son died doing what he loved and excelled at. It does not make it any less shocking and tragic. I want to offer my condolences to Hugh's families---both personal and professional.
Also, hats off to MUTSUMI, for keeping it together--that surely must have been quite difficult. Montreal mourns with you for a wonderful man gone too soon.

Hugh was a kind and inspiring person, funny and dedicated to his family and craft, and a mentor to me. I remember him saying he longed to go to Afghanistan, as dangerous stories were his specialty - he covered 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and more - but was going to respect his family's wishes and stay out of seemingly unavoidable harm's way. His girls were always his top priority... you could tell just how much he loved them by the way he talked about them.
My condolences go out to anyone who ever had the good fortune to hang out with this great guy. It is a sad day for us all.
Hugh, you will be missed.

Over the years we stayed in contact and he has always been there to lend a helping hand. When I was on deadline (at the other network) and couldn't extract audio -- I called Hugh. When I was out west and suddenly needed a camera person, he called me right back with a name and number. If he couldnt' edit something for me, he'd find me someone who could.
Most of all, I liked just being with him and talking about the state of the world.
Thank you for teaching me so much without even trying, and, for the most part, without me even knowing it. Thank you for your friendship.

I do the same kind of work that Hugh did, and I can tell you from doing this there isn't a better job in the world. The people, the experiences and the places you get to see and tell the stories about. Everyday something new and interesting.
I have been up in many helicopter shooting out the door as Hugh was, and it is thrilling and challenging. I'm sure Hugh went up there smiling, and confident knowing he was doing a job he loved.
All the best to his colleagues and families.

Like so many of us he loved what he did, and was driven to be at the big story.
But Hugh knew what really mattered.
Those beautiful girls of his.
Goodbye friend.

Without knowing Hugh, everyone who did, seems to agree that he was a great guy. And I mean, who wouldn't believe THAT? He was Bill's son.
My heart goes out to Bill and his family and his CTV family, as well as to the Bélanger family.
This too, shall pass.

It is also a reminder of the challenges that all newsrooms live with each day. Reporting the news involves risks which is one of the things that makes news people special. Our understanding of the world would not be possible without the work that you do.
Our thoughts are with you.

for some it's short, for others long
The answer lies beyond our reach
it's for us to learn and not to teach
Jesus is with us in times we mourn
Has never left us since we were born
With loving arms He comforts the soul
and puts our lives back into control
A time of joy and a time to weep
promises forever our soul He'll keep
Know our heart goes out to you
yet we know He'll see you through
With Deepest Sympathy!

My thoughts and prayers are with the Haugland and Belanger families today. What a horrible tragedy. My mother worked at CTV for many years and I remember Mr. Haugland coming over to our house on a few occasions. I am a loss for words. May you and your families be spared any more grief. My heart truly goes out to you all.
Bless you.
