Addressing a massive Canada Day crowd, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Canadians have faced a challenging year but "are a strong and resilient people."
Harper, speaking to tens of thousands of Canadians gathered on Parliament Hill, spoke optimistically about the current recession.
"Looking around the world, Canada has fared better than most and looking to the future, Canada is poised to lead," he said.
The prime minister also paid tribute to how far Canada has come in its first 142 years, and where it will go in future.
"We must never forget that our country, our way of life, did not come about by accident," Harper said.
"We are a product of diverse peoples from all corners of the Earth, but committed to common values, a country that cherishes freedom, democracy and justice, a country that offers opportunity to all who seek it, a country proud of our past and confident of our future."
Harper said there is much to look forward to in the future, including the 2010 Olympic Games in B.C.
He said the Games will be the "biggest and best" in history and he urged Canadians to cheer on their athletes in the year to come.
Later Wednesday, in front of the same crowd, Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean paid tribute to Canada's youth.
"Through our youth, we will come to embody, within our borders and beyond, the Canada we still dream about, whose full potential we hope one day to realize," she said.
Celebrations overseas
In Ma'sum Ghar, Afghanistan, some Canadian soldiers marked the day by putting the Maple Leaf on the outside of their tanks.
Trooper James Lajoie, of Calgary, said that every day is a good day to be a Canadian. He placed a Maple Leaf tie over his combat fatigues to celebrate the day.
Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Walter Natynczyk said Canadians soldiers are still on duty, despite the fact that it is July 1.
But he said they will still take a moment "to celebrate the fact that they are Canadians and they are proud."
Natynczyk said the soldiers would likely have a ceremonial drink to mark the day.
"At the end of the day, they just might have a little bit of a beverage, they might even have a tin of beer to celebrate being Canadian," he said while speaking to CTV's Roger Smith on Wednesday morning in Ottawa.
Harper also paid tribute to those serving overseas.
"We celebrate the most peaceful, prosperous and enduring democracy the world has ever known. We reflect on the wisdom of our ancestors who built this great land. And we give thanks to those brave Canadians who risk their lives to defend us, here and around the world," Harper said in a statement Tuesday.
Canada Day events
In Nova Scotia, about 3,000 Haligonians showed up for performances from the National Band of Naval Reserve and the International Tattoo choir, as well as a flyby by 12 Wing Shearwater on Wednesday morning.
In Montreal, a series of events -- including an international wakeboarding competition - took place all day long in the quays of the city's Old Port.
And in Quebec City, a rock concert featuring Finger Eleven, Jonathan Roy, Longue Distance and Pistolet Rose kicked off at 7 p.m.
In Toronto, however, there were fewer Canada Day events than in past years.
Because of an ongoing civic union strike, all city-run Canada Day events were cancelled. Celebrations were still taking place at Harbourfront Centre, Ontario Place, the Toronto Zoo, Woodbine Park and Downsview Park among other locations.
At Winnipeg's The Forks, a late-night concert was to be capped by a performance by the city's symphony orchestra and a fireworks show.
In Regina, celebrations were marked with family activities, some fireworks, as well as a day-long beer garden and set of musical performances.
Further west in Alberta, city-wide celebrations took place in Calgary and Edmonton, where the provincial capital promised to launch "the biggest fireworks shell in Canada."
In Calgary, a concert at Olympic Park was set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. local time.
In Vancouver, thousands were expected to take part in a series of day-long events, including a massive downtown parade and a concert on Granville Island. At nightfall, the city was poised to put on a massive fireworks show in the Burrard Inlet, which was expected to draw thousands.

At any rate, it's not a single leader that brought us to this point and I just don't feel it when people say we're perfection. We're not, but we do have potential, and I pray for that day when we are all treated equally, when no one has to live on the street, when children don't have to live in poverty, when every dying person gets the medication they need no matter how expensive, when we are all truly free to say what we need to say to try and make things better.
I don't 'love' Canada the way it is, but I have hope for it.

Also the Conservative Government should do more to protect the land, and the environment. The Italian Government does more to protect the land than here in Canada. I like nature, and I want to keep it safe, and in good health.

Unfortunately, a side effect of free society is the few downers who have to throw some negative comment into what is generally a very positive discussion board. A minor price for freedom, I guess, and one shared by all free countries but please be aware they are the VERY FEW and not the majority! Most of us prefer to stand on our own merits and do not belittle others to do so.
Happy Birthday, Canada! Enjoy your day :-)

Celebrate Canada Day in your Socialist Empire of Toronto. Oh yeah, you can't because the mayor you elected doesn't like Canada and what it represents and would rather put his support behind Pride Week.
Enjoy your 'special day' Jay.
10 reasons why I love Canada...

2-Freedom of assembly unlike what is happening in Iran.
3-Freedom from the poverty that is going on in alot of poor countries.
4-The ability to learn and go to school unlike alot of third world countries.
5-Freedom to seek employment to better my life.
6-The ability to sleep well at night knowing that death squads won't drag me out of my home in the middle of the night.
7-Freedom to vote for a government of my choice.
8-Peace of mind knowing there is health care available.
9-Peace of mind knowing there are police and an army that are honest and committed to keep me safe from the evil in the world.
10-Tim Hortons coffee.
To summarize, most people don't know how good they have it. Forget about the material goods you don't have, the cold weather, the taxes you have to pay. People from around the world are lining up to come here. Be proud and be happy, life is too short, I feel I have already won the lottery by being born in Canada.

*(June 24th is also the day that Canada's National Anthem for the very 1st time, the date chosen by French & English Canadians to sing it side by side in mutual harmony.)
Only a great country like Canada could have so many big-hearted people that can celebrate all three without any irony in this day & age. That is especially to be appreciated, what with strife & oppression in so many other parts of the world.
We all should be proud of how we have learned more & more how to live together side by side in peace and with mutual respect, and be great examples for every new person who arrives on these shores.
Happy Days to all!

Everything on CTV is a deceit and is the free speech propaganda of only those who own the MSM. The true lives of Canadians are never told in the MSM. The image the MSM present of what Canada is, is a total lie.
The rich intend to kill all of the poor and the old who are no longer useful to them.
Canada is a cesspool of ignorance, misery and fascism. This comment will never be printed because it is the strategy of the MSM never to acknowledge the existence of Canada's power elite who are are in dominant control, who created a financial Coriss for Canadians to have a financial triumph for themselves, and are striving to obtain absolute economic totalitarian control.
There is no Canada nor Canadians left to celebrate. Canad Inc and everything and everyone in it belongs to the Global and Canadian Power Elite.

Canada is not that bad. But some things are not good. The land, and the environment is damaged. There is no magic solution to fix that. Many animals that were in Canada in 1867 are now extinct. They don't exist anymore unfortunately, this is bad. Canada is a modern country. And modern times have destroyed many things unfortunately, that is sad.
We live in a era where pollution is very high all around the earth, and Canada has a lot of pollution. Chemicals, and other things.
Some Canadians are too lenient when it comes to criminals. The justice system is weak. The Prime Minister needs to make the laws tougher. Prime Minister Harper is a good guy, I met him in person.
Some Canadians are nice though. Canada has nice places to visit. Happy birthday Canada.

The advantages all accrue to transnational conglomerates and third world nations. This enriches the rich and takes the living standards in the US, Canada and Europe down to the levels of the third world.
The litany goes on and Canada waits for the other shoe to drop as it falls deeper into depression...But we are 'strong and resilient' Canadians!
This will be a easy for Canada...No Problemo!

It is a great Canada Day. I always wish that Canadians were a little more assertive in showing our colours. That's one of the things I love about the US. I love driving in the US and seeing all the Stars and Stripes. I've noticed that there are more and more Canadian flags popping up on my drives in Canada.
Everyone enjoy Canada Day - wherever you are and whatever you are doing. Take a few seconds to think about how cool our country is and how fortunate we are to live in this country. If you can, go find a citizenship swearing in ceremony and watch people breakdown in joy as they officially become Canadians. People put it all on the line to become Canadians, and we are the fortunate ones to be born with the privilege of being a Canadian citizen. It'll make you breakdown in joy too.
So, Happy Birthday Canada, Happy Birthday to America on the 4th. I hope it is a wonderful day for Americans and my American friends.
Let's go party!

James, consider this advice..
1. You are free to do something more active and useful than whine on a comment page to better your country.
2. You are free to leave and live anywhere you wish.
Thank God that we have had far more people who chose option one and made this land the best country to live in.

July 4th is just around the corner and from us Canadians who respect you and your fellow citizens, Happy 4th of July as you have a lot to celebrate this year despite the economic situation. As for all those Canadians, Happy Birthday and let's rock on. I am not home in Canada to celebrate this year, however I am sure the parties are on from coast to coast. Canada is a juvenile country compare to other nations around the world that are thousands of years old like Greece, and Italy.
Canada was conservative back in the old days (1867 to 1958), not anymore though. Values, and morals don't exist anymore in this country. The bible is not read in the schools anymore. And it should. This is a modern country with no religious values. But I have to be positive in a way. Happy birthday Canada. 142 years old. The fireworks will be nice tonight. Good luck.
have a wonderful day,

I traveled and lived in many countries before I immigrated to Canada in 2003, one thing I am sure that I made the best choice. I did not waste single day to get my citizenship and applied the first day I became eligible.
My Citizenship oath ceremony was one of best things happened in my life. My friend who is born here accompanied me to take pictures and he also took the oath, as he said that he never had the opportunity to take oath.

We live in distant places far apart in miles yet we share much the same values.
We share a passion for life, liberty and justice and share a common sense of humour.
We welcome peoples from around the world to come here and join with us, but not to try and change us
We like our hockey, coffee, beavertails and poutine and our Chinese food
We may have differing opinions frm region to region but at the end of the day make no mistake we will stand on guard for our Canada the country we love so much.
From here in Ottawa I wish all my fellow Canadians across this wonderful nation most of which I have had the great pleasure to visit a very Happy Canada Day!
