GOLDEN In the wake of the latest avalanche death in Canada, an avalanche forecaster is warning the worst may be yet to come.
Rescue teams recovered the body of a skier killed in an avalanche near Golden on Wednesday.
John Kelly with the Canadian Avalanche Centre in Revelstoke, B.C., says the country could be on track for one of the worst slide seasons in recent history.
He says the 2002-2003 avalanche season stands as the worst in recent memory, with 29 fatalities.
But as bad as it has been, the coming months of February and March usually bring the worst conditions, when many people are out in the backcountry as spring approaches.
Peter Bowle-Evans, 61, became the 11th person to die after skiing out of bounds near Kicking Horse resort, west of Golden.
His friends Hugh Southee, 26, and Kyle Chartrand, 29, escaped without injury and dug him out. But despite 30 minutes of CPR they were unable to revive him.
They walked for 10 hours to get help, but by then it was too late. Crews recovered the body Thursday morning.
