John Candy, the late comedian and former Toronto Argonauts owner, will be honoured tonight as part of ongoing Grey Cup celebrations ahead of Sunday's final between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Candy owned the Argos, along with Wayne Gretzky and Bruce McNall when they won the trophy in 1991, though his name was never inscribed in the cup. He died a few years later in 1994.

Longtime friend and fellow actor Dan Aykroyd will be presenting the award and hosting the CFL awards dinner tonight where the mistake will be corrected and Candy's name will be inscribed on the Grey Cup.

Aykroyd told CTV's Canada AM that Candy was an actor who was embraced and beloved by Canada for the right reasons.

"His fame was justly deserved," Aykroyd said.

"He was a writer, he was a businessman, entrepreneur, he was a promoter of talent, he was a producer, a movie star, an impressionist and a great actor. And he was also an owner of the Argonauts, the new generation may not remember this."

The comedian's daughter Jennifer Candy and son Christopher Candy said they remember their father, who died 13 years ago, as a normal dad.

"He was more or less just like a normal father, you know? A lot of people I think try and think that this wild comedian is your father but I think at the end of the day he's the same as any other dad, and I think that kind of goes across the board," Christopher told Canada AM.

His sister Jennifer agreed that despite his fame, John Candy was a normal guy who was first and foremost a father.

Aykroyd said Candy obtained a status that few stars enjoy.

"He was universally loved and universally respected. And you can't say that about all artists, you know?"

Tonight's event will be held during the CFL Player Awards at Roy Thomson Hall.
