The Toronto Transit Commission is doing their part to honour war veterans by offering them a free ride on Remembrance Day.

The tradition has been going on for years, according to TTC spokesperson Mike DeToma.

Veterans ride for free two days of each year -- Remembrance Day on November 11 and Warriors Day, which takes place the first Saturday the CNE fairgrounds open.

"The TTC has a long and rich history of military service," he told CTV.ca.

"During the Second World War, more than 600 commissioned employees listed in service. Those names are remembered on TTC honour rolls, including more than a dozen killed in action."

Canadian war and peacekeeping veterans can ride the bus, streetcar, SRT and subway for free Sunday as long as they show their service medals or ribbons to toll collectors. Anybody accompanying a veteran will still have to pay the appropriate fare.

The honour is just one of many shows of gratitude that will take place around the city Sunday.

Community organizations will host memorial services at civic centres across the city, with a special ceremony at Historic Fort York and Toronto's Old City Hall.

Ontario's Ceremony of Remembrance will be held at Queen's Park at the Veterans' Memorial at 10:45 a.m. regardless of the weather.
