Police have reported that signs on a stretch of Highway 401 recently rededicated to Canada's fallen soldiers have been stolen.

Ontario Provincial Police first received reports of a missing "Highway of Heroes" sign on Wednesday, and say at least another two have disappeared.

"We believe one near Port Hope was taken, and a couple near Trenton," OPP Insp. Doug Borton told CTV.ca.

The 172-kilometre stretch, which extends from Toronto to Trenton, was officially dedicated last month after an online petition to rename the highway was met with overwhelming response.

The route is used to transport the bodies of fallen soldiers to the coroner's office in Toronto once they return to Canada.

Large crowds -- including veterans and emergency service personnel -- have routinely gathered on the highway's overpasses to wave flags in support of the troops.

Borton says it isn't the cost of the signs that makes the thefts upsetting -- it's their meaning.

"It's the significance of the designation of the highway and the signs themselves -- they have 'Highway of Heroes' on them, and the poppy," Borton said.

"It's about Canada's fallen soldiers."

OPP are encouraging anyone who has information about the public tampering with or possessing the signs to contact police.

RJ, I think you have missed the point. It has nothing to do with money. It is all about showing our due respect to the men and women who served our country well in the war.

I am sure that whoever took the signs for whatever reason is a sign of disrespect for the Fallen Soldiers and I sincerely hope that they will realise their wrong doing and return the signs so that they can be erected again for all of our Fallen Soldiers as it was meant to be!!! Yes my friend(s) I am a Soldier who is retired but have the most utmost respect for the Canadian Forces and all of the people serving now and in the past for their country. This has been a real honour for me to have served and I am proud to acknowlege that I have served my country over 32 years and would not hesitate to do it all over again!!!

As the petition creator to get this section of highway renamed, I know the 63,000 signatures I collected, as well as over 71 families of fallen troops who have taken the trip down the highway, all veterans who have served in combat and in peace time and our 70,000 currently serving men and women in our forces, along with anyone with a sense of moral and respect are disgusted. I can say a lot more, but i'll leave it at that.
RJ, this cost only the amount of metal of the signs, it wasn't expensive and its meaning outweighs the cost anyways.

RJ: As one of those taxpayers, I'm more than happy for the allocation if it will make that long drive any easier for the families and comrades of our fallen soldiers.

I absolutely hope that this is a case of innocent mischief; any other implication is malicious and shameful.

It was a waste of taxpayers money to "re-name" the highway in the first place, now we'll have to spend more money on replacing them.

This is an absolute outraageous act. Totally inexcusable.

Jennifer, It would not surprise me if this was someone's misguided way of protesting the war in Afghanistan.

I wonder if these stolen signs have anything to do with the stolen signs welcoming military families to Kingston? The signs have been stolen within the last 2 weeks. Talk about disrespecting the Canadian Forces and their families.

My first thought on reading this story was that the possible motive for such a theft could possibly be admiration rather than disrespect on the part of the perpetrators. They are probably young, and we all did silly stupid things when we were young. I agree that if these signs were available as reproductions that might cut down on thefts.

These people might not insularly have a bad intention, perhaps they wish to display it in some way to show their respect for our military, however their actions are disrespectful and whether or not they have intended that disrespect, they should stop what they are doing.

If the signs are being stolen, people obviously want to have a piece of the history. This would be a wonderful fundraiser for Military Family Centres for members overseas. Copies of these signs could easily be reproduced and sold with proceeds benefitting family members. I for one, living in Trenton, on the base, and having met many of the families of the fallen due to my position would purchase one if available as a fundraiser. J

That didn't take long.

Why? For what good reason would someone possibly have to steal a sign!

That is so wrong on so many levels...

I really hope the people responsible for this are caught.

When I was a boy, we held our dads and grandfathers in awe - anyone who had served in the wars was an object of intense respect - highway signs? Sign of the Times.

We drove this stretch of Highway 401 over the Thanksgiving Weekend, and I cannot tell you the feeling it inspired to see these "Highway of Heroes" signs, in dedication to the memory of our fallen soldiers.

This is an act of utter disrespect. As a member of the military myself, I have lost many friends in Afganistan. When this person or people are caught they should answer to the 71 family's of Canada's true lost heroes.
