OTTAWA — Officials from the Canadian War Museum say they won't change an exhibit which has angered veterans of the Second World War bombing campaign against Germany.

The museum authorities say the display is fair and balanced in depicting that the morality and effectiveness of the campaign are still matters of controversy more than 60 years after the end of the war.

Veterans have complained to a Senate subcommittee that the tone of the exhibit is accusatory and suggests they committed war crimes when they bombed cities.

They want changes to the display panel in question, but museum historians say they are satisfied with what is there.

Jack Granatstein, a former head of the museum and a highly respected historian in his own right, says museum displays should not be dictated by aggrieved groups or political pressure.

He says he has read the offending panel repeatedly and can't understand why the veterans have reacted so strongly.
