EDMONTON — An Edmonton-area man made a brief court appearance Thursday to plead not guilty to charges of second-degree murder in the deaths of two prostitutes.

Thomas Svekla was charged with the deaths as part of Project Kare, an ongoing RCMP investigation into the disappearance of dozens of Alberta women that police have said involves a serial killer.

The preliminary hearing on both murder charges is expected to begin Monday in Fort Saskatchewan just outside of Edmonton.

It is scheduled to last for six weeks.

Svekla's lawyer Robert Shaigec says his client is looking forward to his day in court.
