Vancouver police have arrested a man they believe stabbed several homeless people this month. He was nabbed thanks to the keen eyes of a young patrol officer.
"We are recommending charges of aggravated assault against a 45-year-old suspect," Const. Tim Fanning told reporters on Tuesday.
Police said the suspect has no fixed address. With his hands and feet shackled, officers questioned him for several hours.
He was caught after he allegedly stabbed a 47-year-old homeless man in the throat Monday evening. The victim was waiting at a bus stop.
Moments after the attack, a doctor visiting from Europe treated the victim and tried to stop the bleeding.
A patrol officer driving in the area then saw the alleged attacker who matched the police description: An Asian man with a stocky build and curly hair. Police arrested the man and searched nearby bushes for a weapon.
The homeless victim is currently in hospital and listed in stable condition.
Today, police canvassed area stores for security tapes, hoping the stabbing was filmed. They will not release the name of the suspect until all witnesses have been contacted.
Investigators say the man could be connected to three other similar attacks on homeless people over the last 10 days. All of the victims survived.
Residents in the area were outraged by the knifings, saying the suspect targeted some of the most vulnerable people in the city.
"That's pretty pathetic. The guys are out here because they don't have a place to live, and this guy is walking around stabbing them," one man told CTV Vancouver.
On weekends, the suspect was apparently a regular presence along Vancouver's Granville Street.
"I've seen him before. He wears Gucci shoes and well-dressed slacks and all that," said a homeless man.
Witnesses of the stabbings said the attacker made absolutely no effort to hide himself. After the latest assault, a witness said the suspect casually walked away as the homeless man bled from the neck.
