NEW YORK — "Brokeback Mountain," the story of a troubled love affair between two cowboys, has taken the top film prize from a gay organization that monitors the media.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation presented the award Monday at a ceremony to recognize mainstream media for their "fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community," the group said in a statement.

"Brokeback Mountain" has won several awards and was considered a frontrunner for the best-picture Oscar but lost out to "Crash" at the Academy Awards.

Other winners at the GLAAD awards included Newsweek for magazine reporting; "The Oprah Winfrey Show" for an episode focused on gay people's coming-out stories; USA Today for newspaper coverage; and Melissa Etheridge for best music artist.

This short piece illustrates perfectly the problem with the adversarial legal system, where the idea of actual guilt is irrelevant to all participants in the pantomime. I support the vigorous defence of a person's rights, but also grasp why lawyers come across slimy. It's hard to look crystal clear and clean when you provide your services on a foundation of one set of acceptable lies against another.
