Prime Minister Jean Chretien made his way to Rideau Hall on Monday to formally announce his Dec. 12 resignation date to Governor General Adrienne Clarkson.
While Chretien's departure date has been public knowledge for quite a while, the meeting is a standard bit of Parliamentary protocol in the official transition of power to a Paul Martin government.
"It's sort of an official milestone that has to be done as part of the constitutional process," said Chretien spokesperson Jim Munson.
"They met and he informed her he was leaving Dec. 12," he added.
On that transition date, Clarkson will receive prime minister-designate Paul Martin in a swearing-in ceremony for him and his cabinet.
Clarkson is also scheduled to call Martin this week to officially invite him to the transition ceremony.

This short piece illustrates perfectly the problem with the adversarial legal system, where the idea of actual guilt is irrelevant to all participants in the pantomime. I support the vigorous defence of a person's rights, but also grasp why lawyers come across slimy. It's hard to look crystal clear and clean when you provide your services on a foundation of one set of acceptable lies against another.
