OTTAWA A bronze and granite memorial to Canada's Korean War dead will be dedicated in September in a park which lies in the shadow of Defence Headquarters.
The Monument to Canadian Fallen, a gift of the Canadian Korean War Commemoration Committee, duplicates a monument which stands in the United Nations War Memorial Cemetery in Korea.
The inscription reads: "We will never forget you brave sons of Canada" and lists the 516 Canadians killed during the war or in subsequent Korean peacekeeping service.
The granite base of the monument and the cost of shipping were donated by the South Korean government.
Ki-ho Chang, the South Korean ambassador, said the monument is a "commemoration of the brave Canadian soldiers who gave so much of themselves to secure freedom and democracy in Korea."
The Korean war ended with an armistice 50 years ago last month.
Canada's Korean war dead are also remembered in an inscription on the National War Memorial.
The department also announced that it will contribute $750,000 to another military memorial, known as the Valiants Monument.
This is to consist of interpretive panels featuring 14 heroes who made a significant contribution to Canada's military history, from the French regime to the Second World War.
It is to be dedicated two years from now.
A private group, the Valiants Foundation, will contribute $250,000 to the project.
The National Capital Commission, the agency which oversees federal lands and infrastructure in the Ottawa region, will hold a competition this fall to select an artist to design the monument.
