A Canadian Forces member has been arrested in Alberta after military police found what appeared to be bomb-making materials in his barracks. A spokesman for the Forces' National Investigative Service says they are treating the discovery as serious.

"I can assure you that we've taken this very seriously," Maj. Gilles Sansterre said. "Whether this is serious or just an unfortunate incident, we will do our best to investigate it as quickly as possible.''

The man, whose name or rank was not released, was arrested Friday evening at the 4 Wing Cold Lake in northeastern Alberta.

Police moved in after visiting the airman's room on a traffic-related manner. They discovered detonation devices, wiring and electronic equipment. The building's 65 residents were ordered to evacuate while the base's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team checked for hazards. No actual explosives were found

"The EOD team entered the barrack room and destroyed a potentially threatening device, causing only minor damage to the immediate room," the air force said in a news release. "The residents were then allowed to return to the building without incident."

The National Investigative Service says they have found no link to terrorism in the case, but says charges are pending.

Capt. Leah Gillespie, spokeswoman for the Cold Lake base, said she could not release the man's name or rank until charges are laid. However, she did say he is not a long-serving member of the Forces.

4-wing Cold Lake is the home base to most of Canada's CF-18 fighter jets. The Cold Lake Air Weapons Range is the only tactical bombing range in Canada.
