QUEBEC — Quebec's public security minister says a coroner's inquest into the police shooting of a Montreal teen must continue.

Jacques Dupuis is urging the family and supporters of Fredy Villanueva to give up their opposition and participate in Judge Robert Sansfacon's investigation into the teen's death.

Sansfacon put the inquiry on hold indefinitely on Tuesday, raising concerns about the fairness of the process and the lack of participation by the victims.

Dupuis said in the provincial legislature today that he'd agree to pay the legal fees of the two other teens shot by police last August.

Dupuis was evasive when asked about creating a public inquiry but says Sansfacon has a certain latitude to examine the social context under which the shooting took place, including alleged racial profiling by the police.

The Villanueva family and their supporters say they will not deal with Dupuis and will not participate in anything short of a full public inquiry.

This short piece illustrates perfectly the problem with the adversarial legal system, where the idea of actual guilt is irrelevant to all participants in the pantomime. I support the vigorous defence of a person's rights, but also grasp why lawyers come across slimy. It's hard to look crystal clear and clean when you provide your services on a foundation of one set of acceptable lies against another.
