Barack Obama will visit Canada on Feb. 19 -- his first foreign trip since taking office on Jan. 20, both the prime minister's office and White House confirmed on Wednesday.
Details of the highly-anticipated visit were not immediately available.
"This is a testament, not just to the size of our trading relationship and the closeness of our alliance, but also the strength of our friendship," Prime Minister Stephen Harper told the House of Commons.
"I look forward to an important and productive working visit."
Harper spoke with Obama over the phone last week and discussed plans for the trip.
"Canada is a vitally important ally," White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs told reporters Wednesday. "The president looks forward to the opportunity to speak with Prime Minister Harper and visit our neighbour to the north."
The House of Commons is not sitting the week of Obama's visit, which would seem to rule out a presidential address to Parliament, Harper aide Dimitri Soudas told reporters Wednesday.
Many had speculated Obama might follow in the footsteps of other world leaders who have addressed joint sittings of Parliament.
Those leaders include: Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Vaclav Havel, Jawarhalal Nehru, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and Hamid Karzai, as well as U.S. presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.
Economy top priority
Canada is the U.S.'s largest trading partner and the largest supplier of foreign energy to the United States. The Harper government is hoping to mesh its environmental policies to those of the new U.S. president.
However, it is the global economic downturn that is expected to be the main topic of discussion between Harper and Obama.
Other topics that are expected to be discussed include: the ailing auto sector, and the mission in Afghanistan.
Obama plans to ramp up U.S. efforts in Afghanistan and Defense Secretary Robert Gates has previously made comments that seemed to suggest the U.S. would like Canada to extend its Afghan mission beyond 2011.
Obama's decision to visit Canada first revives a tradition for U.S. presidents. Obama's predecessor, president George Bush, made his first foreign visit to Mexico.
There is no word if Michelle Obama will make the trip with the U.S. president. Former U.S. first lady Barbara Bush made the trip with her husband, former president George H.W. Bush, when he visited Canada.
It appears that the trip will only be one day, which would put a damper on the possibility of a state dinner or any public events.
The PMO said details of the visit would be made available later.

This short piece illustrates perfectly the problem with the adversarial legal system, where the idea of actual guilt is irrelevant to all participants in the pantomime. I support the vigorous defence of a person's rights, but also grasp why lawyers come across slimy. It's hard to look crystal clear and clean when you provide your services on a foundation of one set of acceptable lies against another.

I want to see all the young people cheering for a man that favours same-sex unions, not "marriage", limits on late term abortion, and chose to stand up in church and declare "Jesus died for me" and chose pastor Rick Warren to be part of his inauguration. Don't judge him just because he's a smoker!

When was this JP?
Every time Harper appears on the international stage, he serves Canadians VERY well...regardless of their political leanings.
Your comments have absolutely zero cred, dude...none.

I second the motion but I doubt the pompous Liberals will remain silent. They still don't realize that they are NOT the party running the country (as you can see by the hilarious Liberal comments in today's budget article).

I was at my Florida condo last Tuesday Jan 20 when Mr. Obama's inauguration took place and later at a reception with a roomful of approximately 100 Americans and was very happy for our cousins and main trading partner and their pride in their nation, their great democracy and willingness to make necessary changes.
Without exception, they were bursting with pride and so was I for them.
Mr. and Mrs. Obama will do their nation proud. Both are telegenic, well educated, articulate, informed and eager to repair damages done to the US reputation abroad and repair their domestic economy. [and ours along with it] One slip I got a chuckle over was Mr. Obama's slip when he referred to the "president" of Canada.
I hope our famous anti americanism is put away for the day when Mr. Obama visits. This guy's an internationalist and understands the US is not alone on the planet. Also thus guy's no bumbling swaggering know nothing blowhard windbag. He's intelligent and well informed and willing to continue a tradition of the first US presidential visit is to Canada.
We have an opportunity during his upcoming visit to establish warm relations with him and welcome him to our magnificent Canada.

They'll get along famously. The President will give the PM an elbow and Harper can offer up a well disguised hook.
They'll be great.

No doubt Mr. Obama has been briefed and I'm sure he'll hope that the "children" have been sent to their room before he visits the Prime Minister. I worry those coalition clowns may do something to embarass us more when he visits! Is there a "Lock up the Opposition for the night" clause in the Constitution?

Of course Haprer did not get a literal majority. Given the distratiing BQ, the irrevelant Jack-Pack, and the Grren party no one will ever get a 50% plus 1. But, NOTICE, not one of the other parties came even close to getting the vote or seat total of the Conservatives. Yes, Bryan, THAT is democracy. Live with it. Obama is.

You and the other 65% of Canadians who voted for the Opposition are being heard. Look whats in the Governments budget; its actually a Liberal document!!
Simply by having conservative voters like me respond to your blog should make you realize that we do care, that there is hope for a better country and that we are'nt all ignorant rubes.

I have some bad news for "Diana from Victoria" thoough. If Obama had run up here,he would have LOST in a really big way.
If Harper is called a Conservative here,Obama would be the real "neo-con" that Goodale keeps seeing behing every rock.
I expect the main gist of the discussions to be quite interesting. How will the adoring hoards of Obama worshippers,or,for that matter,Ignatieff respond when Obama asks for more help in Afghanistan,or for more debt to stimulate the economy.Or if Obama points out that the USA will have no need for cars, oil,or lumber from Canada for a very long time.Just try to stimulate an economy after that.
No.I'm not worried that Obama will drag Harper one way or another.I'm worried that Harper will drag Obama even further to the left than this week's budget and the coalition did.
Obama was a Liberal only long enough to get Clinton out of the way.The political centre in the USA is far to right wing, even for people like Manning and Harper.

Remember that the duly elected PM got in by the skin of his nose and that MORE people voted against him than for him. Those representing 65% of the population have every right to have their voices heard.
I can't wait for Harper to embarrass us again if the topic turns to the environment. Obama is a very bright man while Harper is the equivalent of a Bushie that is blinded by ideology.

At his inauguration, 2 million of his fellow countrymen and visitors from around the world arrived to honour him and listen to his inaugural speech. I saw grown African-American women weep upon witnessing this historic event.....
Canadian politicians and the electorate could learn from this man. He has tremendous character traits, refrains from slagging his political opponents ( is the Opposition listening??!!), honours his history and is the poster child for decency and honesty.
He is a great hope for peace and justice in a troubled world.
Heres hoping Canadians everywhere greet him in resounding numbers during his first visit to our country and show their appreciation loudly!!
Meantime, lets give our Prime Minister our full support and refrain from unhelpful and demeaning comments regarding our Governments motives in presenting the current budget.
And lets all try to get along regardless of our ploitical affiliations!!
Pro Patria!!

Obama is poised to introduce broad-based, middle-class tax cuts that will result in a $3,700 tax cut for a married couple earning $75,000 with two children, far higher tax cuts than the ones introduced in Canada yesterday. Obama supports the 2nd amendment right to bear arms, is AGAINST gay marriage, is against socialized medicine, and supports the death penalty in certain cases.
