Obama girls will do chores in White House
The Associated Press
Date: Thursday Nov. 27, 2008 8:47 AM ET
CHICAGO President-elect Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, said their young daughters will still have to do chores in the White House, including picking up after their new puppy.
Sasha, 7, and Malia, 10, will have to "scoop the poop," the president-elect said in an interview with Barbara Walters broadcast Wednesday. "We've been talking to them about that. We don't want litter on the White House lawns. They're going to have to do their job."
The Obamas long ago promised that the girls could get a dog after the election, but the family has not yet chosen what kind. Walters suggested one like her Havanese named Cha Cha.
The president-elect grimaced and said it sounded like a "little yappy dog," the type that seems a little "girly."
"We're girls, we have a house full of girls," his wife shot back.
He pledged the family would "have a big, rambunctious dog of some sort."
Either way, walking the dog and cleaning up its messes will be the girls' responsibility. The Obamas said the children will also help out around the house.
"That was the first thing I said to some of the staff when I did my visit," Michelle Obama said. "I said, 'You know, we're going to have to set up some boundaries,' because they're going to need to be able to make their beds, and clean up."
The girls, who will be attending the prestigious Sidwell Friends School, also will be expected to do their homework as usual. Although, the president-elect said, Malia has her eye on a special spot to write important papers.
When she came back from her White House visit recently, she told her dad that she plans to work at the desk in the Lincoln bedroom.
Obama, who is known to be an avid reader of Lincoln history, said his daughter told him "I'm going to sit at that desk, because I'm thinking that will inspire big thoughts."
During the interview, Obama described the desk as being the spot where Lincoln signed the Gettysburg Address. While there is a copy of the address on display in that room, it actually was the Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves that Lincoln signed there.
Obama will be sworn in on Jan. 20, and he said he wants to work quickly to make the White House "green."
The president-elect said he plans to sit down with the chief usher for the presidential mansion and do an evaluation of its energy efficiency.
"Part of what I want to do is to show the American people that it's not that hard," Obama said.
Asked whether he'll be tiptoeing around at night, turning off the lights, Obama said he isn't going to be obsessive about it.
"But I do that in my current house," he added, "and there's no reason why I wouldn't do it in my next one."

This short piece illustrates perfectly the problem with the adversarial legal system, where the idea of actual guilt is irrelevant to all participants in the pantomime. I support the vigorous defence of a person's rights, but also grasp why lawyers come across slimy. It's hard to look crystal clear and clean when you provide your services on a foundation of one set of acceptable lies against another.

Has middle class values.
This will make it easier for the averge person in the US to relate to them. It also means that the concerns off these people will be considered more than it has in the past

Last week it was the big important decision the Obama's had to make. "Will their kids go to private or public school?". Is this really relevant or newsworthy?
Then you have the people who have the audacity to say that they wish our Prime Minister was as "cool" and "interesting" as Barack Obama. Guess what? The last time Americans voted for someone that was cool, and you could crack open a six pack with was George W Bush. Look how that turned out?
The media has turned politics into a personality contest. It reminds me of high school. Be glad that many more Canadians vote for their candidate based on the issues and not by their "coolness". Charisma is a dangerous thing, and history has proven this time and time again.

I'm sure he's a great guy but look at his appointments: Former Fed Chairman, Clintonites, Hawks. We will still have foreign wars (Iran and further operations in Pakistan most likely), crooks running everything behind the scenes, a dosmestic stazi-like "civilian" National-Security force, and a system that continues to fleece its people.
I must admit, he is the best figurehead to come along in long time but he's just that. He can sell anything to anyone right now, and that is his job. Its a continuation of the same agenda.
The question is: Will he repeal the patriot act, stop warrantless wiretapping, and return posse commitatus and charge the criminals from the Bush admin. If not, I don't care about the dog or his turning off of lights. Enjoy the Kool Aid folks.

Clearly Dan you have never met Stephen Harper for he is a man that above all else his primary concern is for his family. (as every Dad should.)
Your criticism of his parenting is not only agenda driven it is a complete misrepresentation of the truth.

I love how conservatives have to constantly bemoan change and take potshots at a guy who is trying to clean up the mess that the current US government has created. May I remind you, the current government is "conservative" and look at the global financial crisis we are now in.
Our Prime Minister is no better. He denied that climate change was an issue until he was blue in the face and only came around to the issue when he was basically forced to by the overwhelming evidence put out their by the scientific community. As for the financial crisis, he was trying to deny that too before the election and only started addressing it when he could no longer deny it and remain credible "looking"
Obama is not going to fix all the problems in the world. But he will do his best and he will do a far better job than his conservative predecessor. AND by virtue of this story, it goes to show, he is willing to lead by example and be a man of integrity, which is something that is lacking in most politicians and people these days.

Which reminds me of the time i went to a drive in movie, the guy in the car next to me was watching the movie with his dog next to him in the front seat.I was so amazed at this that when it was over i had to comment by saying i would never have believed a dog would watch an entire movie,he replied neither would I because he hated the book.My point is there are good cheerfull stories everywhere.

Hey man - MOVE SOUTH!
Personality and parenting do not run a country. The honeymoon will be over soon for Obama and once he has to make some tough decisions that may hurt Americans you'll see the love stop and the daggers come out. Primeminister Harper is a leader - how he lives his private family life is just that - private.

All we have here is a cardboard phoney for a PM and other party leaders who act like children.
Perhaps that will change in a few months.
