In the race for the White House, both Democrat and Republican presidential hopefuls have been tirelessly repeating the word 'change' in an attempt to reengage voters fed up with the current government.

While it seems to be working for Barack Obama, the revolution that long-shot Republican candidate Ron Paul is offering may be just a little too much, well, change for the average American.

Still, the 72-year-old congressman from Texas, who ran for president as a Libertarian in 1988, has managed to raise record amounts of money online.

He also has -- arguably -- the most vocal and dedicated supporters.

"He's getting fervent national support from a lot of people who really like his ideas or like the novelty of his ideas," Renan Levine, a professor of U.S. politics at the University of Toronto, told CTV.ca.

"Sometimes it's not just what he's saying but the fact that what he's saying is quite different than what everyone else is saying."

As an advocate for a very strict, limited federal government, Paul has somehow managed to get people excited by talking about the constitution.

Seriously.

On "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno, the night before the New Hampshire primary, Paul drew cheers and applause from the audience not for being funny, not for taking shots at George Bush, but for saying this:

"The American people... want real change... To me that means the only significant change we ought to have is get enough people in Washington that read the constitution, obey the constitution, do only the things that we're allowed to do."

Brian Doherty, a senior editor at Reason magazine, told CTV.ca that there are two main components to Paul's popularity.

The big one is that Paul is the only Republican candidate that's against the war in Iraq, said Doherty -- who recently wrote about Paul's following for the Libertarian monthly magazine.

"There are a lot of people who generally want the government to leave them alone so they're not really comfortable with the Democratic party," he said.

"But (they're) also against the war, so they need an anti-war guy who isn't also a nationalized health care guy, a 'let's raise taxes' guy."

The second thread, says Doherty, is that Paul has consistently promoted the same ideals for more than 30 years.

"One of the main complaints Americans have about politicians is that they're sleazy... they flip-flop, they pander, they'll say anything to get elected," he said.

"Ron Paul is totally the opposite of that, he says things that no one really wants to hear, or that you wouldn't think anyone wants to hear.

"He's been saying them consistently for decades and a lot of his fans are like, 'We believe this guy.'"

Faithful following

His followers, known as Paulites or Paulistas, have been portrayed in the media as being different than supporters of other candidates.

"If you actually are around them at rallies, they are very excited, they're more excited than most of the fans of the current crop of candidates," said Doherty.

"They do shout, they do chant. They really believe in their guy."

Doherty said many of the Paul supporters he encountered were relatively new to politics.

"They can sound overly excited to people who are used to dealing with politics in a more measured way because a lot of them are new to it," he said.

"What I picked up is that they believe the ideas and they never saw any other politician out there... saying what he's saying."

Largely due to meetup.com, which has allowed supporters to network and form groups across the U.S., Paul has generated a huge online buzz without much mainstream media attention.

"This is not the powers-that-be doing this, this is not big corporate interests, this is a grassroots, people-powered movement," said Doherty. "It gets people excited. They're thrilled. They see a chance for something they haven't seen in American politics in their life."

Even in Canada, the 'Toronto Ron Paul 2008 Meetup Group' boasts 119 members. Part of the message on their main page says:

"We are expecting Ron Paul to secure the Presidency in 2008, buoyed by the small donations of individuals as op to corporatism seeking gov't contracts and control over the rest of us."

One of the members, named Tony, also runs a site called 'Canadians for Ron Paul' which, in its mandate, says it is meant to "challenge the established media black-out of Presidential candidate Ron Paul here north of the border, and to disseminate his message far and wide."

Paul's strong positions and his fervent support base have drawn criticism from the mainstream.

Doherty said it's because many Paulites believe in things that lots of Americans think are crazy.

"Ron Paul said in the debates early on... the reason we got hit on 9/11 is because we've been intervening in the Middle East for decades and decades," said Doherty. "If you say that in a Republican Party meeting they're going to say you're a nut."

His supporters can also get riled up if they feel Paul is being overlooked or misrepresented.

"If a reporter ever says anything that the Ron Paul fans think is not respectful of their candidate you're going to get hundreds of angry emails and that adds to the whole 'fanatic' thing too," said Doherty.

"And if they think Ron isn't getting the attention they think he deserves they'll start accusing 'Oh, you're blacking him out or there's a conspiracy against him.'"

But Levine said Paul's supporters are probably no different than any of the other candidates' backers.

"If you interviewed Huckabee supporters would you find some strange ideas in the group? Without a doubt," he said.

The Paul effect

Despite his strong online base, the support has not translated into votes.

"An online following, by definition, is spread out across the country and the world," said Doherty.

"Primaries require a certain set of people in one place to not only vote but to cast more votes than all the other people who, of course, have had the advantage of being treated seriously in the mainstream media for months."

Levine said Paul likely doesn't expect to win the Republican nomination, but rather is "successfully raising his profile."

"He's certainly creating an infrastructure, people are giving money, they're signing up for web lists," he said.

"These are the kind of things that he or others may be able to capitalize on in the future."

Doherty agrees, saying he doesn't think Paul will win any primary.

"But what he's done already is that he's engaged this enormous nation-wide group of hundreds of thousands of people who are excited, who are willing to give their time, who are willing to give their money and they're dedicated to this set of small government, anti-war ideas," he said.

"The significance of Ron Paul's fans are probably not going to be manifest in 2008 but we will definitely see it manifest down the line."

Doherty said there's room for Paul's Libertarian ideas within the Republican party and that this may be the beginning of a strong push -- much like the beginnings of the religious right within the party.

"I think what we'll see is lots of people running for congress, lots of people entering the Republican party at the precinct and county level who are Ron Paul Republicans."

We have a President who says that he doesn't care what the people want. He's going to do what he thinks is best. He calls the Constitution a G**D***** piece of paper. Who is he working for?

We elect a Democratic Congress and Senate that promises to end the Iraq war. When they get into office, they continue to fund the war with their pork barrel spending attached. Senator Feinstein allocates millions in contracts to her husband. Nancy Pelosi attaches a $25 million contract for her husband to the war funding. They tell Bush that he can have his war as long as he pays them off. They tell Bush that he can have his war as long as they can have their parks.

We support a candidate only to have him ignored and excluded by media conglomerates controlled by a central bank. Ron Paul is not a serious candidate even though he beat Giuliani and Thompson, they say.

American soldiers, defenders of our Constitution, support Ron Paul more than any other candidate.

and they call us nuts.

I think those who really run things will not let Ron Paul win despite his rapid climb in public support and sensible policies. For a while it seemed like they wanted to set up Guilliani to lose to Hilary. But the Manchurian McCain beating Obama is just fine in their books. As long as they get one of their puppets in the office it does not matter. Democrat or Republican. "Those who cast the votes decide nothing.
Those who count the votes decide everything."Josef Stalin

Ron Paul has as followers a host of conspiracy kooks who believe that 9/11 was caused by the government, the moon is hollow, the world is run by the illuminati and the masons; in short, folks who think the Matrix was a documentary. He hasn't got a hope...

Americans have it all backwards. They treat their constitution like it was written by God while they view the bible as a legal document. Ron Paul is the only guy who can put the jumper cables on the right posts on the religious wackos and war mongers.

Ron Paul message is prophetic. The other Republicans think that he's a crazy, but actually there's nothing crazy about bringing America back to what her founding fathers intended. About 9/11, Ron Paul was trying to explain about the events but Giuliani steps up to intervene like he's trying to blame Americans. These logical flaw in the Republican candidates (except for Dr.Paul) makes even George Bush looks good.

Ron Paul is Vox Clamantis in Deserto.

Thanks so much to the US for bringing the world into an era of the War of Terror. Nothing like a regime of liars and war criminals who fabricate evidence to invade sovereign nations to increase the profits for a few elite individuals in the US. Land of the free and home of elected war criminals.

The world does not want the form of corruption and greed running so called democracies in the west. US imperialism must end along with the continued War of Terror being run against sovereign nations. There is no wonder why the US is hated so vehemently around the world; look at what the Federal government there has done to foreign nations.

All the world needs is another relic from the intellectual dark ages representing the Republican agenda of terror hidden behind a false front of promoting democracy. The US is a cancer eating at the world and when the self proclaimed leaders of the free world, which is an absolute joke, stop their tyranny, only then can world work towards peace.

The US is responsible for the deaths of millions of innocent people around the world and is a nation that undertook genocide against the Indigenous peoples there and has never answered for that barbarity.

The world can not afford the insanity of the right wingers any longer.

Your article was more favorable than many however you seemed to suggest that every fan feels wronged when they believe their candidate has been ignored by the media. Ron Paul fans have good cause for their beliefs. The FOX snub was pretty glaringly apparent given that Guiliani was invited with his measly 4 % compared with the 10% Paul received in Iowa. The fact that his fans raised a record $6 million in one day...well, that too is pretty incredible for a candidate who is apparently as unpopular as the mainstream media would have us believe. No. I don't buy it. Paul has a very enthusiastic following because he's honest, period. And the sleazy corporately owned candidates are getting nervous. And so they should. In an unspun world, there is no question he would win but alas we live deep in the spin.

What do you mean "it hasn't translated into votes?"

Ron Paul's nationwide support translated into 12,000 votes in Iowa, 10% of the Republican total, and more than one-time front-runner Rudy Giuliani by a a wide margin.

And that was in Iowa, in a state not very receptive to his message. He has far more support in New Hampshire and Nevada, both of which vote this month.

You can't say his support hasn't translated into votes before any of the votes have even been held!!!

Ron Paul is not a Racist I love it when people try a call Ron Paul a Racist because thats the only thing they can come up with to try and make him look bad. His take on the Middle East is that we should pull out Stop Stop giving money to these nation's stop going to war with them. I think that's the most sensible thing The United States has heard from a potential president (that we can actually believe in a long time) Ron Paul is truth! Ron Paul is Freedom! This country moves closer and closer to fascism with each and every presidential election. You think there is some one else out there that is better? Take a long hard look at the candidates and you will see Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich are the only people you can really trust. What is most important in my opinion about Ron Paul's views is that he will save us economically and that is something that must be done. So please take your Ron Paul is a racist and Ron Paul doesn't no anything about the Middle East and shove it where the sun don't shine, because when Ron Paul gets elected the world will be a better place.

Thank you very little.

I've been watching Ron Paul very closely from the UK, hoping and praying that the American people will wake up to the truth. I’ve been resolutely disappointed that this hasn't been happening as much as I'd hoped... but this article has hit the nail right on the head.

Ron Paul is the starter of a revolution, and a revolution that will gather momentum over the next few years. Dr Paul's ideas sound cranky to most people right now because most people haven't had time to digest his message properly, or research the truth of his words... but time will change that. Enough people have woken up to the lies they are fed on a daily basis to make sure that the truth doesn't die, even if his chances of a presidency do.

I hope and pray that Ron Paul will become THE republican candidate for the presidency - but I know that's not likely to happen; I take solice in the fact that he's removed the blinkers from the eyes of so many. If every one of the people he's touched with his message passes that message on to their peers, then over the next few years, the revolution will grow. Hey, there’ll be another corporatist presidential puppet making a mess over the next four years, giving Paulites a perfect opportunity to say “I told you so” to the rest of the country!!

As for the mainstream media, I can’t understand which I’m more angry about – the fact that they spin every story based on the their producer’s orders from above, or the fact that people will swallow any old crap rather than discover cold hard facts for themselves.

TO Scott,
Racist article? Did you even read it or just being a good sheep and taking a FOX reporters out-of-context word for it? The reason Ron Paul wants to end the war on drugs is because blacks are a victim of it. Instead of using tunnel vision to sum him up, do some serious research. Its people like you who misinterpret these ideas and twist them into "oh, he wants to make all street drugs legal so everyone can get hooked".

Ron Paul said numerous times (as the media tried to play it out of context) that he didn't want money from white (or any) supremicist group - or did you just conveniently let that go in one ear and out the other? If you're looking for a candidate who involves himself in supremacy, take a look at the black supremist church Obama is a member of: www.tucc.org/about.htm Let's see... what could we twist that into?

Do you have any idea how the fed's logic in running a public school system has played a role in the dumbing down of America? That's what screwed everyone who uses public schools - bureaucracy. We should support a system that pays $1100 for each toilet seat in the public school system? Local governments can and have run it more efficiently with better education.

When he talks about the FBI and CIA, he isn't talking about abolishing crime fighting - just how they are run and they should be run according to the constitution and not by power-tripping egomaniacs.

Stop eating all that garbage FOX puts in your mouth.

John McCain believes it may be necessary to stay 100 years on Iraqi soil with our weapons raised. Strangely, borrowing a trillion dollars from China does not appear to be a concern of his. When does it become a concern I wonder? Ron Paul, a respected veteran in his own right, has a decidedly different view. I am voting Ron Paul, a man who will fight for us. Dr. Ron Paul is a man of honor who served as a flight surgeon during the Vietnam War. He risked life and limb and his quick thinking and bravery saved countless lives in the heat of battle. We should all thank him for that regardless of our politics. God Bless You Dr. Paul.

On the GOP side, only Dr. Ron Paul had the courage to speak out against the illegal, unnecessary Iraqi war that has devastated the citizenry (According to Lancet Medical Journal 500,000+ innocent Iraqi civilians have been killed; half of Iraq is under 15 years old) and is playing a big part in destroying our economy and currency. job. He supported hunting Bin Laden down and going into Afghanistan to bring his carcass to justice but not the bombing and rebuilding of Iraqi bridges to protect our oil. The Iraqis did not attack us on that horrific day. The attackers were mostly Saudi nationals. More troops support Ron Paul than any other candidate. Does it matter what they think or are Iraqis more important?

Every candidate, save 3 (Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, and Mike Gravel), will continue the downward spiral to despotism in America. Liberty is no longer and vote fixing is becoming the norm in America.

Are Canadians ready for a North American Union?

If you love your sovereignty then you'd better hope someone like Ron Paul gets elected or there won't be a Canada or America. What happened in Europe with the European Union against the people's will, will happen here too.

Check out some of this guy's YouTube videos http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=EmitRelevart (among others) to see what's really going on in America and NOT what you see on CNN or FAUX news.

Also do a search on the CFR (Council on Foreign Relations) and its members and google Freedom To Facsism on video.google.

America is quickly sinking into a state of totalitarianism, and going broke. If you think this doesn't affect you here in Canada, think again.

It is times like these that radical change (such as those included in Ron Paul's message) is needed.

To those who've been saying this isn't Bush's fault, do you have any idea what a PD (Presidential Directive) is?

PS - At least Canadians still have freedom of the press and a press that can think and write for themselves (like CTV), habeas corpus, etc. I hope you don't let that slip away as we have.

Many say Ron Paul can't get the Rep. nod. That's because they're looking at the Republicans. What they need to look at is the Democracts. The White House is going back to the Dems next year if the GOP doesn't nominate a candidate that can beat the Dem's nominee. Can Huckabee beat Clinton or Obama? I don't think so. I'm a Democrat who just registered Republican to vote for Ron Paul. I think Paul can pull enough Dems and Inpdts to win as the Republican Candidate. The GOP has a tough decision to make and they better take a good, long look at it. I think they already have started ... because they denounced FOX for excluding Ron Paul from their Forum. Did the Dems to that for Kucinich? No. Because they knew he couldn't beat any Republican candidate.
