OTTAWA — Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson has announced 82 new appointments to the Order of Canada, including jazz artist Diana Krall, former Olympic gold medal speed skater Catriona Le May Doan, former B.C premier Dave Barrett, and Steve Smith of The Red Green Show.

The new appointees include one Companion, 28 Officers, 52 Members and one Honorary Member. Recipients will receive their insignia at a ceremony later.

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service. It is Canada's highest honour for lifetime achievement and has three levels - Companion, Officer and Member.

The one Companion named is Richard E. Taylor, Stanford, Calif., and Medicine Hat, Alta., for contributions to science.

The Honorary Member is Francis H. Cabot, of New York and La Malbaie, Que., for contributions to horticulture.
