Six Vancouver police officers have been suspended following allegations they assaulted several men early on Jan. 14. Criminal and internal investigations have been launched, the department confirmed Friday.

The six constables were suspended with pay Thursday and authorities have reportedly broke open their lockers and seized uniforms, boots and batons.

It's alleged that three men, aged 27, 33 and 37, were picked up on Granville Street, driven to Stanley Park and beaten.

"There were no serious injuries, no fractures," said police spokesperson Const. Sarah Bloor. "There was a victim who received a cut to his head."

She said that person went to hospital and has been interviewed by police.

News reports Thursday suggested the men were teenaged street kids caught dealing drugs.

Bloor would not say why the men were originally picked up.

This is the latest incident to rock Vancouver police. Last summer an officer was charged for beating up a taxi driver. The department also faces allegations that officers used excessive force at a Guns N' Roses riot.

If there weren't so many people who hide their faces when committing violent acts then we wouldn't need a law forbidding masks. Unfortunately this is our society now. No one can hide their faces... we aren't special over here, violence has arrived and it is here to stay. Let's not kid ourselves. Violence just escalates to new levels. We've let this "hiding the faces" scenario go on far too long.
