OTTAWA - Eric Daze's third goal of the game, with 5.4 seconds left in overtime, lifted the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-4 win over the Ottawa Senators on Monday night.
Daze took a cross-ice pass from Steve Sullivan on a 2-on-1 break and beat goaltender Patrick Lalime to the far side for his 23rd goal of the season.
Daniel Alfredsson's second goal of the third period, with 43 seconds left in regulation, tied the game 4-4 for Ottawa. Alfredsson tipped defenceman Wade Redden's shot from the point past goaltender Jocelyn Thibault.
Just 1:18 earlier, Chris Neil's second goal of the game, during a scramble in front of Thibault, brought the Senators (20-14-4-1) within 4-3.
Peter White and Steve Sullivan also scored for the Blackhawks (23-12-8-0), who have won four in a row and are second overall in the NHL to the Detroit Red Wings.
Neil opened the scoring 12:14 into the game when he caught Thibault (21-10-7) on a wraparound for his third goal of the season.
Blackhawks defenceman Phil Housley left the game midway through the second period when he slid to block a centring pass and was hit in the head by the puck.
White tied the game 1-1 at 12:08 of the second, tipping Tony Amonte's shot in off a post past Lalime (12-12-4). Ottawa defenceman Karel Rachunek was serving a double-minor for high-sticking Sullivan.
Daze and Sullivan sandwiched goals around Alfredsson's 19th before the midway point of the third period, leading to Ottawa's rally fuelled by Neil and Alfredsson.
Notes: The Senators were busy in December, playing 16 games and equalling a franchise record. Ottawa went (8-6-2-0) in December, playing four games a week twice during the month.
