Canucks beat Habs 2-1
Date: Thursday Feb. 22, 2001 7:35 AM ET
Dan Cloutier just barely made the save of the game for the Vancouver Canucks. Cloutier made 25 saves - including a game-saver with 1.5 seconds left to play - and Markus Naslund scored his 34th goal of the season as the Canucks extended their winning streak to three with a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.
During a scramble in front of the Canucks goal with time winding down, Cloutier, sitting in the Vancouver net, denied Montreal the equalizer when he whipped out his glove to snare Saku Koivu's shot.
When I went and grabbed it, my glove hit the post at the same time, so I knew that it was out,
Cloutier said.
Koivu, who raised his hands in a short-lived celebration, wasn't so sure Cloutier was quick enough to prevent the puck from breaking the plane of the goal-line.
I went straight to the ref and told him to go upstairs because I thought it was in,
Koivu said.
A video review upheld the referee's decision that the puck didn't cross the goal line when Cloutier made the stop.
They came out hard that last shift and it was just a lucky bounce,
Cloutier said. I tried to cover as much of the net as possible and it just happened to hit my glove.
Rookie Daniel Sedin also scored for Vancouver (31-19-5-5), which won its first game at the Molson Centre and first in Montreal since Nov. 28, 1992.
Matthieu Descoteaux scored his first NHL goal for the Canadiens (20-32-5-4). Descoteaux was called up from Quebec City of the AHL on Wednesday to replace Eric Weinrich, who was traded to the Boston Bruins for Patrick Traverse earlier in the day.
Growing up, I always watched all the games,
said Descoteaux, a native of Trois-Rivieres, Que., who grew up cheering for the Habs. I had everything - tuque, gloves jacket, it was all Montreal Canadiens. So being able to score in my first game at the Molson Centre - it's a pretty amazing feeling.
Jose Theodore made 20 saves as the Canadiens lost for the first time this season when they've opened the scoring (14-1-3-2). Descoteaux scored 15:06 into the game when he redirecting a pass by Craig Darby inside the far post.
Sedin tied the game on a power play with four seconds left in the period. His 15th of the season came off a goal-mouth scramble, with his brother Henrik earning an assist. The Canucks are 12-2-1 when both Sedin twins register a point.
The goal in the first period was a momentum swing,
said Naslund. We got it going our way after that. They came out hard, and we knew they would, so it was important to get that goal before the period was over.
Naslund gave the Canucks the lead for good at 1:53 of the second when he left Patrice Brisebois in his wake at the Canadiens' blue-line and, with Trevor Linden riding his back, ripped a wrist shot past Theodore.
The goal ran Naslund's points streak to five games.
It's a good feeling when you can make a move work like that,
said Naslund. It's nice when you can finish it off too.
The Canadiens were booed relentlessly by the crowd during the final five minutes of the game.
