‘America’s Next Top Model’ contestants take on Toronto Fashion Week
The Brits and the Americans have been battling it out on “America’s Next Top Model” for the past several weeks and now the contestants are ready to take on another country: Canada.
On this week’s episode of “ANTM: British Invasion,” now available online at CTV.ca, the girls get a surprise video message from Canada’s own Jay Manuel, who invites them north of the border for Toronto Fashion Week.
Manuel, who spoke to CTV.ca about the excursion while in Toronto for the event last fall, says the task was not set up as a competition for the TV show, which gave the girls a chance to go on castings for real shows, walk alongside real-life models and be seen by international press.
“They were hugely excited and one of the designers they ended up coming to cast with was myself and my team, my stylist and show coordinator,” says Manuel of his clothing line, ATTITUDE Jay Manuel, sold exclusively at Sears.
“I actually ended up casting four girls from the remaining 10 in the competition and they were in my collection and they blended seamlessly.”
Despite the pressure of the real world of modeling, Manuel says the girls did really well.
“I was really proud to see how many girls were booked for all these real shows. I think what’s going to be really exciting is when the girls go back and meet with the judges and show they really have what it takes to be part of the business.”
Because the event was not set up as a top model challenge, having the girls walk in the shows had to be kept a secret. But Manuel says the “ANTM” crew was able to film the girls walking the runway without anyone in the audience knowing.
“At Fashion Week, all you have is photographers and cameras surrounding backstage, front of house, so they didn’t know who our contestants were, they didn’t know who the real models were, they didn’t even know our cameras were there so it really gave the girls an opportunity to be a part of Fashion Week in a real way.”
While in Canada, the girls also did a photo shoot with organic maple syrup.
