Catherine wanted the 'ANTM' judges to see her cry (in her photo)
Catherine was eliminated from “America’s Next Top Model” because the judges didn’t think she channeled the right emotion in her photo, but the 22-year-old from Folkestone, England, says the picture chosen wasn’t representative of her shoot.
On the latest episode of Cycle 18, “British Invasion,” the girls travelled to Macau, China, where they had to pose with real silk worms while wearing silk couture dresses. Photo shoot director Jay Manuel told the girls he wanted to see a lot of emotion in their faces and eyes so Catherine decided to think of a very sad event – someone dying – to accomplish this.
“(Mr. Jay), he wanted all the girls to feel quite sad and bring that sad emotion to it so I thought I really embraced that. I was the only that one cried. It was a bit risky decision what I did, but I still stand by it.”
But the shot of Catherine that was shown to the judges wasn’t one of her crying. Instead, she was shown sticking out her hand. The judges were not impressed.
“I remember Kelly (Cutrone) made that comment, about if someone had died would you stick your hand out? But I said, ‘No, I cried after that. That was one of the beginning shots before I even started.’ It was so frustrating . . . I was just disappointed there wasn’t a shot of me crying to support what I did.”
Even though she went home, Catherine was told by host Tyra Banks on the way out that she was “timeless and iridescent,” as well as very talented, but she had to remember to hold onto her confidence.
Catherine says it is advice that will stick with her as she pursues future modeling plans.
“She’s the main reason I wanted to do ‘America’s Next Top Model’ because I’ve always looked up to her and watched her since Cycle 1 really, I’ve been a massive ‘Top Model’ fan, so her advice means a lot to me. I will definitely use it.”
Catherine also received a lot of praise for her performance in her music video, which featured her and the other British girls singing and dancing together as a girl group, and she says she would be open to doing something else in that vein.
“I love modeling but I’d love to do more TV work or presenting work, or I’ve been joking with the other girls, like, ‘We should be signed. We’re a good music girl group. We should get Simon Cowell to sign us.’ I’m joking about that sort of thing (but) anything that comes my way, I’m always open to it.”
Now back in England, Catherine says she hopes her time on “ANTM” will open a lot of doors for her – whether that’s at home in the U.K. or across the pond in the U.S.
“I’ve got family that lives in America so I’d love to come out and work more out there. On ‘Britain’s Next Top Model’ I came second, so I was sort of scared to do ‘America’s Next Top Model’ in case I didn’t make it as far but I’m relieved I made it to Top 6. It’s just been an amazing experience.”
